squeaking/screaming brakes

Post by sxt03 » Tue Sep 09, 2008 3:16 am

Me and my father recently did a brake job on both the rear as well as the front brakes. Every since that brake job, when i start to stop i get squeakage, sometimes its a little, sometimes its a TON. Also, if im going at slow speeds 5-25mph in a neighborhood with car's parked on each side of me i can hear sqeaking bouncing off the car's around me even when im not on the brakes. The car stops perfectly fine, its just the squeaking is getting worse and worse. Im nearly 100% sure its the front brakes, but its possible its the back ones.

Hell, for all i know it may not even be the brakes, something else may be at work that im not aware of. All i know is that AS SOON as the brake pads were replaced, the squeaking began.

what type of pads did you use? Do they squeak when you brake? or do they squeak when you are not braking? or both?

Forgot the brand, im nearly sure they were ceramic tho. These make noise when im not on the brakes, and when im on the brakes. It was worse when im on em tho. Im told the ceramic brake pads make more noise, but this ammount of noise just flat sounds unhealthy...

i'm just curious to see if your rotors are in good shape? i doubt you could have overlooked really bad rotors when doing your own brakes...

If the rotors+ drums werent replaced or turned, this alone can cause the squeeking. The new pads/shoes should be mated to new or newly surfaced drums/rotors for proper operation. The old shoes/pads had a wear pattern and the new ones will now ride unevenly. If everything is new, and you broke them in correctly, then you either have contamination (dirt/oil) causing the noise, or just squeeky linings in general. I thought ceramics were supposed to be quieter...

ceramic pads are supposed to be quiet until they are going bad. There's a squeak built in when you're getting low to let you know it's time to change your pads.
I'm not sure what it could be if it happens all the time. My srt rear discs make squeaking sounds when i take the ebrake off after being parked and drive a block, but then it stops...

...but i have wrecked parts...

many times people buy just any ol' set of pads and rotors. you can't do that though. when it comes to brakes, you get what you pay for. another thing is if you replaced the rotors, did you clean the shit off them? that shit will glaze over the pads and ruin them

Ill ask again since no one answered the first time... and the question was somewhat important....

Did you bed the brakes properly, ie. did you brake them in the way they are suppose to be or did you just start using them?

each set of brake pads has their own methods of bedding them. When I didn't do it properly on a set of mine I had squeaking and grinding sounds.

I think on the Hawk pads your suppose to do 2 med/firm stops from 25 mph and 2 hard stops from 45 mph.

Another situation I ran into with some more substantial grinding/squeaking sounds came from not having a bolt tightened on the knuckle. This ended up putting grooves into my rotors which I ended up just replacing. The bolt in particular that I thought I tightened but apparently didn't was the one that connects to the ball joint on the LCA.
