Satellite Radio and stock HU

Post by slonoma98 » Tue Aug 16, 2005 1:59 pm

Guys, I'm picking up a sirius starmate to put in my 2000 Dodge Neon with 4 disc in-dash cd changer. I want to hard wire the sirius unit to the stock headunit and keep my stock cd changer. The input adapters I've found so far can't be used with the stock cd changer for example: http://store.yahoo.com/logjam/piechry98aux.html

Do you all know of any way to do this without using an fm modulator? If not can you recommend a fm modulator? Is the one built into the starmate good enough? I'm taking a 3 hour drive to Cancun next month and having satellite radio would make the drive easier. Thanks.

I've heard a few other Sat radios using their built in FM Modulators and from what I've heard most are fairly decent. When you get your radio I'd check it out to make sure it meets your standards then if it doesn't then start exploring other possibilites for hooking it up.

There is one option though for getting Sirius but it's pretty messy after thinking about it ... I'll explain it anyway.

Well... giving this some thought and I think I finally got it right... I think.

Right now the only possibly easy option on keeping your stock HU and have a direct plug-n-play setup is using the Sirius Sat Radio kit from Mopar (Receiver Kit - 82206488AA - $175.00 USD List + Neon Install Kit - 82208117 - $124.00 USD List). The receiver mounts in the trunk of the car and piggybacks with the CDChanger plug letting you keep the use of your CDChanger.

Problem is... in 2000 and 2001 Mopar redesigned the CDChanger input plug and possibly the main plug that provides power and output to the speakers. So getting the Mopar kit would not work due to the plug redesigns since the kit was ment for 2002 and later models.

There may be one work around though, swapping to a 2002 HU may work, you would just need the Mopar converter plug that is used to make a 2000 and 2001 changer work with a 2002 HU which may give you a chance to be able to use the Mopar kit. Then there is another problem that if the Main plug, the one that provides power and output to the speakers, if that has changed then you are out of luck on that option since you wouldn't even be able to plug in the '02 HU.

Little Messy huh? Yeah well I just thought I'd throw that out there for you haha Thats as much as I can help you

It would be cheaper to buy a new headunit and sirius antenna kit and ditch the changer in favor of MP3s and satellite. Not to mention the quality of the output would be greater with the condition you stay away from the low end junk units.
