opinions on all season tires

Post by Jerome Adams » Wed Oct 01, 2008 10:13 pm

Just got word I will be moving from the MS gulf coast to the St. Louis area next summer so I have been researching all season tires. I kicked around the idea of running summer for 8 months or so and then throwing on some cheap all seasons for the other 4 months...but I am leaning more toward running an "ultra high perfromance" all season all year long. Winters won't be too bad, mainly temps and a few snow/icy days. I want max dry performance and something that will get me home safe if the weather goes south.

So anybody have experiences or opinions on these? I need 205/50/15 (they will be going on 15x7 Rota slipstreams)

1. Kumho Ecsta ASX...I am running Kumho Ecsta SPT right now and like them a lot, these are the all season version so these are my default choice. They are also the cheapest of the lot at around $60 a piece

2. BFG super sport all season...these are relatively new and not a lot of reviews available...just under $90 a piece

3. Toyo Proxes 4...I love the way they look! Around $80 a tire

4. Nitto NeoGen...same as above. Saw reviews that they suck in the snow and tread life is questionable.

Thanks
Jerome

I put Falken Ziex 312's on my 98 the day it was snowing here. They worked pretty well in the snow. The 912's are what I had on my 05 for a long time, and they worked really well. Lasted a good while too.

I too run the SPTs. Great tires  I use the ASXs on my 15s for winter. I can't compare them apples to apples since my SPTs are 205/50/17 and the ASXs are 205/60/15, but the ASX is a good all around tire. Just don't expect anywhere near the same grip. We didn't get a lot of snow here last year, but when I did drive in some I was impressed.

My buddy uses the Proxes 4s on his SRT all year and likes them a lot. Good at everything he has dealt with so far. They would be my second choice.

As to the others, I have no opinion since I haven't used them nor know anyone who has.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

I've ran two sets for Kumho ASX's in the snow. Both worked great. (one set of 195/50/16 and the other 205/50/16).

The BFG is going to be the best quality tire, and I would bet money it has the best dry traction out of those 4. It comes down to how much money you want to spend. If you're trying to save money, go for the kumho. I would go with the BFG just because their rubber compound is one of the best available.

Thanks for the inputs! I thought about the Falken 512 but they had some crappy reviews on discount tire. I don't want to go over $100 a tire and want the best dry traction possible. If the all seasons aren't up to snuff, I will probably just get some summers when I get some extra $$ and then put the all seasons on my stock rims and run them during the winter.

I have seen some good reviews on both the proxes 4 and the neogens so I shall continue to research.

What about tires for SRT-4s? I just found out today that the Yokohama 205/50R-17 93V XL B rubber that I put on my car back in June of '06 is down to the wear sensors at less than 30K miles! :cussing: And TiNK didn't name me "Gramps" for nothing- I drive just like a Grandpa (meaning I don't abuse my tires) so I am extremely disappointed about the lifespan of these tires. I can remember getting 70K-plus on the OEM Goodyears on my '84 Omni. Plus, this couldn't happen at a worse time for me financially as I am flat broke. Discount Tire sold a 60K warranty on these so I'll be getting some of my original investment back but I am hesitant to try this brand again. By the way, these are the only non-American-made tires I have ever purchased.

Any opinions on the BF Goodrich g-Force Super Sport A/S
205/50ZR-17 89W BSW tires? According to Discount Tire's website, they retail at $12 more each than the Yokohamas. The mileage warranty is only 30K but this is what I got with the Yokohamas anyway. And I'm wondering if the BFG's are made in the US (the OEM BFG's are).

I wouldnt trade the peroxies FZ4s for anything in the wet and they stick pretty hard in the dry as well.
