erratic throttle? ('01)

Post by 1st gen troll » Thu Oct 02, 2008 10:56 am

I'm going to be assisting a friend with his girlfriend's 2nd gen, my expertise lies in the 1st gen so I figured I would run this by you fine folks....

He says the throttle is very erratic, that sometimes you have to floor it and wait for it to go, other times you barely touch the gas and it "goes like hell." Sounds like TPS to me, but I dunno, anyone agree? I see you can pull the P-codes from an 03+ with a "key dance," can you do the same with an '01 or do I need to send him to AutoZone for their OBD scanner? (the thread on 00-02 P-codes didn't mention a key dance) I haven't looked at it yet, was just trying to get as much info as I can before he brings it over here.

I forgot to ask if it was auto or manual, but I presume it's an automatic.

Thanks guys!

the "key dance" only works if you have a check engine light on and/or if you have a P-code. If it's not throwing a code, it may just say done on the odometer.

Do the P-codes come across the odometer or something like it appears the 03+ does (I think that's what the post implied), or do I have to decipher it from CEL flashes?

Sorry for the n00b questions, haven't messed with 2nd gens much.

The p-codes will be shown in the odometer screen. Any time you do the key dance, it will list the codes in there, Even if there is no CEL. Since some codes don't actually trigger the CEL to stay on. (ie misfire codes, unplugged battery, ect)
New Sig Time.

Wait what the hell, did you change your name?
Yes, it might be the TPS, or perhaps the cable itself. I don't know the tendency for them to get caught on anything or stick, but just a quick look around wouldn't hurt.
