Need some opinions, good or bad. (Now with engine pics)

Post by This Ya Boy » Sat Oct 04, 2008 9:57 pm

Hi guys, I recently saw this car nearby. I haven't test drove it or anything, but I have seen it in person and heard him start it up. Its a 2004 neon with a srt swap. It appears to have the suspension done as well, including the rear srt interior (not front). Has the srt transmission, some aftermarket boost guage. The guy doesn't know much about srts but it has a pretty sweet exhaust. He posted the ad for 7800, but he now wants 7000, but I offered him 6500 and he's reluctant to take that for it. I have some pictures of it and figured you could maybe help me with this. The car has 35,000 miles on it. The engine does look insanely dirty and bad. By bad I mean like it was missing an injector cover and the wires were everywhere. I have 3 pics enclosed.

Please discuss!

Wait... he won't take 500 less than what he's asking for, you heard it run BUT it doesn't have a v.c. or plug wires? Are you sure he didn't put a CD on his stereo for ya?

Not to mention, why in the blue hell would you offer money without driving the car? Especially that much money... 6500 bucks and you can't start or drive the car. It could not even run...

No no no, I am explaining this all wrong. It was pouring out so I told the guy I didn't wanna test drive it the day I saw it in person because I didn't wanna fuck something up. Its definitely a srt engine and swap, it just looks a lil sloppy. I'm going to be posting some engine pics very shortly.

Valve cover is kind of an important thing to be missing, don't you think?

Injector cover, not so much, wires being everywhere, pretty easy to clean up.

I'd still pass...

If it is a SRT swap it -may- be worth it. I would defiantly test drive it, see what it has done along with what needs to be done.

Your description made it sounds worse.

if i could afford it, i'de be on top of that. a test drive is a must though... for one, you wanna make sure it drives right, make sure there's no abnormal sounds, make sure its spooling when it should, see what it spikes and holds, etc......

one could wonder WHY this kid's sellin it in the first place...

just be careful

...no idea, i cant really make it out clearly...

if you know what to look for, then inspect it yourself. look for any leaks, pull the dipstick, check for a milky deposit on it, start it up, etc...

Thats what I'm afraid of... I don't know what to look for.... It looks ok to my eye but I'm very novice to the srt engine and stuff.

Any other suggestions?

Matt should have mentioned that doing so in public may get you a public indecency ticket, so be careful.

LOL at the above post.

EDIT: I just love how on here most people are like "go for it" while on srtforums everyone's like "get a real srt, don't do it"

Just hilarious imo.

well i would say if the car sounds good and all get it cuz the difference between that car and a real srt4 at that point well there isn't much besides the exterior styling.

I'm very much considering it, just afraid of the obvious concerns.

I've seen used legit SRT's go for close to that price. Kinda high for a backyard swap IMO. Especially from a guy who "doesnt know a lot about SRT's"...

Spend 10k for a decent REAL SRT-4.

He just bought the car the way it is now. Minus the intake and exhaust. It already was swapped.

I can't find a time to go see it with school, work, and the gym lol but I'm actively talking to him.

EDIT: Should this be moved to general discussion? Just wondering.

If you are serious...

-If the oil has not been recently changed suck some out through the dipstick and send for analysis. The results will tell you a lot.

-Take it for a test drive... how does it feel to you?

-Take it to a decent independent mechanic and have that person test drive and check it over.

-Have it dyno'd.

After all that you will have some hard information upon which to make a decision. If it turns out to be basically acceptable but some items need work... you can use that as leverage to negotiate the price down.

Personally I would never purchase something like this.

What are the chances that it has been driven hard? SRT motor... yep pretty good.

The guy(s) doing the swap... what was their skill level with that kind of job? That is an unknown... who knows what sort of jackpots may be lurking in that thing.

Doesn't sound like the seller is motivated... not willing to drop even $500.

Pass for me.

Not to mention the motor looks like it was stored in water due to the rust and grime all over it.

make sure you get receipts, that will tell you, if you can find the shop that did the swap mabye try and give them a call or something, and when in doubt, take a mechanic friend with you, we all have them

I have to admit regardless, its very very tempting just because its already swapped so half my trouble is gone already, but Paul56 you make some great points.

Everyone is really helping a lot I just don't know what to do for sure. I really need to find time to test drive it.

for 6500-7k you could probably find a srt motor and trans and have someone swap it for you into youre car. Have it looked at by a trusted mechanic and dyno it before you make any calls it would suck to get a srt swap all effed up

Not to sound weird but aren't dyno's expensive???

I know the cliche answer is that money shouldn't be so much an option when you're looking at a car blah blah...

Just wondering.
