How did you get into the "sport compact car" scene

I drove a friends car which was a 1gn DSM, He told me to get on it around some corners. This friend was very wealthy, the next day he asked me if I want to drive in the SCCA doing Autocross and Road Racing. The rest is history.

It was in High School. I got into 1st gen Water-Pumper V-dubs. Rabbits, Scirriccos, Jettas, and the almighty Dasher Wagon.
We were dirt ass poor so there was alot of garage engineering involved. Cut springs, gutted catalytic convertors, and baked headlamps were the norm.
I have many a fond memory of making "european bumpers" out of USDM units with a dremel and some epoxy.
I eventually graduated to some nicer cars. I had about $10K into a Jetta II at one point. Oettenger Stage 1 turbo, full cage, and an ECU from New Dimensions in San Jose.
