A GTI?

Post by quicksilvr » Tue Oct 07, 2008 10:15 pm

I'm considering buying a 2007 VW GTI to replace my car, BUT I need to sell my car first. This entire post has two purposes: Get attention to the fact that I'm selling my car (see my for sale post), and get opinions on this major life changing decision. 2gn.org, I am at your mercy

A number of years back I worked as a lot boy for a VW, Honda, Acura, Jag, Porsche, And audi Dealer. The VW/Audi's where broken right off the truck more then any other car. I was told to drive everyone of them around the block sveral times to make sure nothing was broken on them. We would get them with broken displays in the dash right off the truck and or seatbelts that didn't work, or dead batteries, the list goes on and on. I loved driving them but I would never own one if I cared if it was in the shop a lot or not.

I'm not a fan of VW's because of the servicability issues. My fiance had a Beetle for a while and everything about that damn car seemed special and/or a PITA to do. The air filter took me like a half an hour on my first try

The fuel filter HAD to be from a dealer because the purolator I got from Advance Auto didn't fit. It was just one thing after another.

I'm not going to modifiy the GTI much at all. Lower it (they sit about too much as high as a stock neon, lol), tint the windows and put a factory lip kit on it. I'm not going to make it fast or screw around with it, because frankly I don't have time to anymore. I realized I haven't been enjoying my Neon like I used to because I don't have time to work on it. And it's simply not a good car to have for using a baby seat in the back, because it's really loud, and the exhaust smells of uncatalyzed fuel. Hence I'm ready to let someone buy my car that will enjoy taking it the rest of the way in the modification process.

The number one reason for even considering a GTI is because it's a car that my dealership took on trade and I personally can buy it for a STEAL of a deal. Like below "rough trade in value". :) And I really like the car after spending a couple days driving it.

yeah i understand what your saying and you have your mind made up. i would still be weary about buying a vdub.. i absolutly love the way they look when modified but same thing my mom use to have a beetle and it was the biggest peice of shit ever.. no modifications and we were at the dealership like 10 times in the first two months.. after that we said screw it and she got a scion.. i would look into something else if it were me but i would have to say they are good looking cars..

A German car out of warranty is not worth the hassle. They are well made with alot of attention to detail and interiors that make you swoon. But AWD on them is so finicky, electrical gremlins out the butt (search VW coil pack and window regulator failure on Google...ooo boy!), 60K timing chain change intervals and nothing is cheap for them ever.

Audi or VW. Neither will enter my life as long as I continue to wrench my own cars. My next ride will prolly be a Honda CRV or a V6 Accord. I can still work on them, cheap-ish to fix and I can get parts readily available. Reliable and great resale. A bit slow and boring but I am 31 now. I can handle it a bit. A little lower, some big sways and a couple little things could make it fun. The CRV (first gen, 5 spd.) can get a Jackson Racing Super Charger for cheap and with that AWD it'll go off road as well as a Jeep Liberty, for the most part.

I'm well aware of the maintenance issues after it's out of warranty. It already had a broken window regulator and mirror control switch when we got it, lol. Our shop here where I work is European luxury cars only, and we've got three master techs, one of which is German and a friend of mine. I'm not concerned about working on the car after it's out of warranty too much.

I'm only buying it if I can sell my car though. I'm taking pictures today probably, and going to put the car up on eBay probably tomorrow. I wish someone from the forum wanted it, I'd be the happiest with that.
