Wheel bearing bad?
Hey guys, ok, so i'm getting his rattling sound from the back of the driver side.... and it happens only when i go over a speed bump or a pothole or something... and it seems like it only rattles when the rear driver side wheel runs over something... Do you guys think it is the wheel bearing? It sounds like metal to metal sounds... I'm thinking maybe i lost a metal bearing? and when it goes over the rest of the bearing bounces up and down and makes the metal to metal rattling? anyone had this problem?? THanks!

Re: Wheel bearing bad?
You can check whether your bearing is bad by raising the wheel off the ground and seeing if it rocks in an out (from the top and bottom... you know push and pull on the top of the wheel and if it shifts it rocks).... if this occurs your bearing is bad.dodgeneonzl wrote:Hey guys, ok, so i'm getting his rattling sound from the back of the driver side.... and it happens only when i go over a speed bump or a pothole or something... and it seems like it only rattles when the rear driver side wheel runs over something... What about your struts? How old are they? Top hat bearings on them could be bad or the strut itself.... Just a couple other things to look into....

Everyone knows that for breasts to be "perfect" they need to be within reach.
does that "shake test" apply to rear wheels too?
when my rear bearing was trashed it sounded sometimes like screeching metal.. like some jagged broken piece of metal was hitting up on some other metal surface... think fingernails on chalk board, but in metal.
also some general clanking sounds and such
when i took out the hub this is what i found

if you think it could be the rear bearing best thing to do is run down to autozone / parts store and buy it.. then pop out your hub and find out for sure.. that way if it is bad you got the part right there to replace it.. if it wasnt that then you can return the part. unless you have another car to make the trip in while your wheel is torn apart..

Hm... I hope it's not the strut because i just got them like two years ago... they're HP Tokico Blue struts...
it sounded like um... how about this... it sounds like you flip a metal ruler against a metal post... so you get this short but fast rattling sound... as like it hit it and then bounces back and hit it again... for like 5 times and then stopped...
I might just take out the bearing and see if it's still good... i'll do that next week... but anymore suggestions would be good though... so i can check them all out next week.

Wheel bearings usually give you a metal screech, a audible hum, or a groaning sound. If it only happens over bumps I would look at the top hat bearings since the struts are pretty new. I think you can actually just re-grease and re-pack them yourself instead of buying new ones. Never done mine, but I've read it on one of these threads.
