Horn stuck on?
Hey guys,
I have a 01 neon that the horn is stuck in the On position.... It's a bit of head scratcher since my Dad was driving it and I have no real clue why? He pulled the relay to get it to shut off.... I checked the relay and swapped it with another one... same thing...So anybody else have this problem? Where should I start looking?
Thanks

Either a short in the wiring to the relay coil, the "switch" in the wheel, or the clockspring has grounded out. The steering wheel end is the ground path for the relay coil.

It's probably the horn switch inside the airbag. The safest way would be to replace the whole assembly. And if you have to ask a question like this (no offense) then I wouldn't recommend repairing it by replacing just the horn switch as improper reassembly can result in a non functioning airbag during an accident.
It also could be the clock spring, but I would disconnect the airbag and see if you can put the relay in and have the horn not automatically come on. That will determine if it's the clockspring or horn. Normally things don't work when the clockspring goes (airbag, horn) not come on automatically so there's a pretty good chance it's the horn switch.

The reason I asked the question in the first place is to figure out if this was a common problem..... Yes, it was caused by the horn switch in the airbag... Since I've never worked on airbags before I enlisted a professional...engineering tech that works for the manufacture.... We basicly ordered a new switch from the plant and fixed the unit.... Your right.... not for the beginner! It wasn't that hard to do but the parts are not availble to the commom person.... FYI the bag assembly costs $847 list from the dealer... Best thing for someone is to get another airbag from the junk yard.... BTW my car has only 50,000 miles on it! At least it's fixed.... Cheers gents!
Anybody know if there is something different about the switch in 2002? My local dealer says it isn't servicable seperately from the bag. Mine is doing the same thing, sounding the horn randomly. Just want to replace the switch and not the whole bag. I opened up one I have off a 2000 and the switch is seperate.

Thanks, I think I'll just use the one off the 2000 airbag module I already have. The connector is different between the 2000 and 2002 so I guess I'll just switch the connector and install the switch.Danteneon wrote:While you can get to and remove the switch, Chrysler does not sell the switch seperately, only with the airbag.
Time to hit up them junkyards.

That is what I had to do (swap connectors) when installing Speed Control from an '00 into my '01. Still works like a charm

***Update*** I swapped out the switch out of another bag and changed the connector. Works perfectly and now no more randomly honking horn to annoy the neighbors.mrgto68 wrote:Thanks, I think I'll just use the one off the 2000 airbag module I already have.
