New Gauge install

Post by SXT05 » Sat Aug 20, 2005 7:37 pm

Hello all. I just pruchased the glow gauges for my neon. I have a 05 SXT. Before I pull the dash apart, I was hoping that I may be able to get some input on what to expect when I start this project.

I searched around on the board and came across someone else that asked the same question but did not get an answer. I apologize if this has already been addressed, I just wasn't able to find it if it has.

I am trying to figure out how these stick on. Is there some type of glue or something I should use?

It looks like there is a power switch that plugs into the black box and also that the two wires coming off the gauges also plug into the same box. Then all I need is power and ground wire. Do I need to run this myself or will there be a spot behind the dash?
Where did some of you put the power switch at?
Do I remove the old gauges, or just put these over the top?

When it comes to taking off the needles, which it seems like I will have to do after some reading here....will they just slide off with a slight "tug," or do they "snap" off and on?

Any tips or advice is much appreciated. Below are links to the gauges I got. I got the '03 Chilton's manual and plan to use that for help taking the dash apart. Anything else I shold be aware of? Thanks.

As for the glue to use, make sure you use something strong that won't come off over time. I used super glue on my gauges.

Taking off the needles is a pain. You need to mark exactly where they are on the dial. Once you have done this, use a small flat two-pronged tool to remove the needle. I used a pickle fork for mine. However, you may be able to slide the gauges over the top of the needles depending on how much room you have to play with. If it doesn't feel like it's going to fit, don't force them.

For the power and ground, you need to hook those up yourself. See if you can find a non-fading power source from the multifunction switch.

I don't remember what the wire color was that I tapped into.

please do not glue them...just get some 3m double sided tape...that will hold the gauges in perfectly...when I installed my gauges all I did was get a fork and slide the gauges up very carefully but not so that they actually come off...then stick some tape on the back of the gauges and then slide the gauges into place....then hook up your wires...

I've heard problems with the double-sided tape coming loose over time though. This is the only reason why I used glue on mine. Of coure, I have like three gauge clusters so I'm not at all worried.

Thanks for the link, I think that will help.
I was going to install these tonight but it was too hot to continue with it after I installed my new speakers. Maybe next weekend I can get to it.

I did wire the guages straight to the battery just to make sure they work before I go ahead with the install. When I powered them up, there was a high ringing tone coming from them. Other then that, they seemed fine.

As I write this, I am wondering if the sound is even loud enough to notice with the car running and having them inside the instrument panel. I didn't try it with the car on, just did a quick check in my garage to see if they worked.

Is this tone normal? Do you notice it while driving?
