Havin a slight problem with my SRT....

Post by mopar4life » Mon Oct 20, 2008 8:48 pm

The past few days my SRT has been leakin coolant from the middle of the engine. I came home from racin yesterday and found a puddle under the car of it. Would this mean the water pump is goin out, the bolts aint tight, the gaskets are blown or a combination of all three?

Where, exactly, is it coming from?

ok, i had this issue after fixing my car after my accident....it looked like it was dripping from the belt side or passenger side of the motor, almost from the oil pan, etc....and i couldnt figure out where it was coming from.....figured out that my coolant cap was loose(the silver one that is in line) and it was on tight enough to stay in place, but loose enough to let coolant out, have it drip down and pool on something, then drip into a puddle on the ground.....long shot, but check it.....and you probably already know this, but let the engine cool down alot before taking off that cap, bad burns may follow

Worst case, it's the water pump seal. Not fun to fix, for sure. You have to pull up that side of the motor, take off the timing belt, and get at it. Expect it to take all day.

My friend was doing this, there was even some coolant in the oil. Check your headgasket

I had this problem too. Easy fix, its the coolant cap off of the t-stat housing.
x2 to what moparman00 said (just read the post).

I saw this happen to somebody in real time at a rest stop. Car overheated so he popped off the cap for some reason, to put coolant in I guess. I'll never forget the screams.

Check SRTforums and browse all the how-to's. The rubber coolant lines tend to give out pretty soon because of all the heat the turbo generates.

Was bored and found the link for yah:

Thank yall, Ill check into your link there Neon. The cap is plenty tight but we're pretty sure its the seal on the pump. A new pump is 42 bucks so no biggie.

How many miles are on the car? Might as well replace the timing belt and tensioner while you're in there.

And my cap was tight too. Why not replace it just to be safe? Or I guess you can spend a lot more on fixing something that might not fix it. Two of us already had the same problem and did the same thing to fix the problem...

Yeah, that's pretty low mileage to be doing the timing belt. If you were over 50k I would say do it, but you should have a good 60k left on the tensioner and belt. Most people do it all at once because it's such a pain to get into the timing cover.

Although, once you've pulled it apart once it takes less than half the time to do it again.

When removing hot rad caps, rags are key. Best option is to wait until it's cool though.

If your friend knows what he is doing it shouldn't be too hard. Only tip I can give is to use a prybar or large flat head between the engine and firewall mounts when jacking up and lowering the engine to remove the bolts. They like to get caught on each other which makes you think it's stuck on something else. And of course, use some rtv sealant on the water pump gasket. But I would imagine you friend can handle it.

I hope so, it shouldnt be that tough to figure out. We got the pump in today. How many hours should this take roughly?
