wheel paint

Post by jetas » Tue Oct 21, 2008 1:04 am

Alright so i picked up a set of rims a short while back and i finally got my tires on them but ive been waitying to paint them. my dad finally made some time at the shop he works at to paint them. but now hes saying that the paint wont stick to the lip cuz its polished aluminum. Is this true? of course im guna prime the wheels. but is he correct in saying the paint wont stick properly to it? and if so would i need a special primer or something?? thanks

Polished metal is too smooth, be it steel or aluminum, the paint may bond, but the bond will be so weak any little bump will remove the paint. They should have been painted before the tires where mounted. Have them media blasted for optimum adhesion, or scuff them up at the very least.

I did, but the wheels weren't polished before hand. I simply had to sand/scuff the clearcoat finish first.

The polished lip can be painted, but the polished portion will need to be sanded to allow the primer/paint to bond. Also, use a self-etching primer if you can get it.

Good advice there...as always

Yep sand blast them or grind them down a bit and use a primer meant for a bare metal substrate. The chemicals used to polish them are deeply set into the metal, and will not allow for proper adhesion regardless of your primer. You need to get them down past that first.

All this is great to kow. Wat i ended up doing was wet sanding them 320 then moved up to 600. the lip i sanded til it felt rough. i sprayed the entire rim wit acid etch as a good sanding. i drove around for a while wit them on n the primer is still on. is this a good sign?

I would paint the inside (backspace) black, but that's up to you.
