is it the alternator?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

is it the alternator?

Post by haste4daylight » Mon Nov 03, 2008 11:46 pm

for some time now (few months) when i start my car a screeching sound begins. It sounds like its a belt but when i begin to drive and my car shifts gears the sound gets really loud and then the screeching stops. Twice now my battery light came on because im assuming its from the screeching. I asked a friend about it and she said she had the same problem and it was the alternator needing to be tighten. Has anyone ever experienced this problem?

Sounds like the belt is loose or just needs to be replaced. The battery light coming on is a dead giveaway.

I had the same problem (minus the battery light). Local mechanic said it is the tensioner.

I would try tapping it with a rubber hammer, but as long as the bolt that locks it in place on the top is loose, the adjuster screw should move it. I don't think I even loosened the pivot bolt when I did the timimg belt.

It's either the alternator or something related. You can get your alternator checked at [insert random local auto parts store], normally for free. Also, check the belt for wear and tension.
