Spark plugs and Oil issue

Spark plugs and Oil issue

Post by my02neon » Thu Nov 06, 2008 11:25 pm

Well today i was ridin home from work and about 15min later my car started losing power slowly to where i can only go 20 mph and started to sound like one of those harley bikes. So when i got home i took off the TB off da manifold and all dis white smoke came out, waited for it 2 clear and all i saw was a big puddle of oil like enough to fill up a 4 oz cup. Then I got a p0301 code so i went to go check all spark plugs and this is what 1 & 2 looked like:

Image

3&4 looked good, and it idles at 1300 for whike and starts climbin on its own.And one of the tubes on my headers starts glowin red after 3 mins of runnin.

Has any 1 else had this problem?

When was the last time you had a tune up?? Or better yet, when was the last time you changed your plugs?

Just asking but were they installed properly, cuz there was another thread about this spark plug blow out, except there plug flew out from the hole...

That is weird, not really sure I can help on that one...what brand were the plugs btw?

Dude, Those spark plugs you were using, are for an srt-4 and not a base model neon.

2.0sohc - 14mm thread, 19mm reach, 6-heat range
model# BKR6E

2.4dohc - 14mm thread, 25mm reach, 6-heat range.
model# LZTR5A-13

The plugs you were using are a full 6mm longer then the originals, and frankly i wouldn't be surprised if the pistons broke off your spark plugs.

Oil in the intake manifold is normal, why do you think 75% of us are running oil catch cans. Poor pcv design. New pcv valve helps($5), or a 95-99 style valve cover will eliminate the problem, but costs more to do.
New Sig Time.

Yeah, those are definitely the wrong plugs. The correct plugs like was mentioned above are significantly shorter.

I'm surprised it took this long to be a problem.

Seriously people, this is bullshit.

His car isn't my style, but you don't see me digging into the guy for his style.

His spelling may be off, but atleast you can comprehend what he is trying to say. Unlike so many others here.

^^^^ +1

This is a serious issue, i would go back to whoever sold you the sparkplugs, and show him what just happened. there is a possibility of engine damage because of this.

change the plugs, and put the correct ones in, and then see what happens. i am trying to think where the metal pieces will go. maybe leave the engine through the exhaust valves?

i'd want to pull the head first and make sure the electrodes weren't still in the bore. They will cause hell on your cylinder walls.

If you don't have anything constructive to add to the thread, don't post. Trolls are for other sites.

Edit: You prolly won't get any compensation from AZ as they will use the why didn't you check the parts before you installed them?
Hopefully nothing is damaged, and you can just write it off as a learning experience. Always compare new to old. And pray one of them is correct.

do you think something so fragile will have significant impact on the cylinders/ bores? wouldn't they be sucked-out through the exhaust valves?

Eventually they would, but those little pieces can hammer a lot of area before they do. Hopefully they just melted off. Can't tell from the pics.

to me it looks like they melted but on one of the SP the center electrode is missing also. anyways i switched back to the platinum's SP which i know its a big no no, but they were the only ones good. Started it up and it still sounds like a harley, Cyl 1,2 &3 are sparkin #4 barely sparks. I have the MSD coil pack with the Granatelli SPW.I switched back to my stocks and it does the same thing.

find a set of coppers before you start troubleshooting.

Well this is just me thinking here, but even though they are tiny, they are still pieces of metal, and at the rate and speed the pistons move at, it would be fairly easy to damage the cylinder wall after constant up and down motion, but yea eventually they should leave through the exhaust valves...hopefully...

That makes me think they already got sucked out, and may have damaged the exhaust valve. I'm pretty sure the header shouldn't glow like that.

I would do a compression check.

Check to see if the cat is glowing red as well. Some of the metal may have gotten to it. Even a small blockage will cause the exhaust to be restricted enough to case the car to run like crap. If it is getting red, you will need a cat.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

You might want to check your vacuum lines while you're at it. That might cause the high idle too. Just a thought.

My best guess now is that the debris may be stuck to the exhaust valve that the tube is glowing. For a quick dirty compression test, pull the plug wires and crank it over, it should sound consistent in cranking speed. If there is a compression leak in one cyl., it will speed up momentarily. It will prolly sound like one is hitting harder due to the previous one being easier on the starter.
Theory:
The reason why the tube glows is due to the fuel burning on it's way out the valve, due to it being slightly open on the compression cycle. Chances are if it is run like that for too long it willl cause damage to the valve/seat.

That's exactly what I was thinking, unburned fuel passing through the valve. This could ruin the O2 sensor and melt the cat as well.
