adjusting e-brake cable for rear disc

Post by c987long » Thu Nov 13, 2008 1:29 pm

i am having a a little problem, i just put on and adjusted my new parking shoes. but i am having to pull the brake handle all the way up to the point where i have to open the center console to get the car to stop rolling..

my question is, can the cables be adjusted to take the slack out, or should i just buy new ones?

thanks

Well the adjustment is in the star wheel adjuster. you dont actually adjust the cable length u make the brake shoes spread farther apart so they are closer to the drum and have to travel less when u pull up the e- brake. The way its done is without having to remove the wheel is: (you might Have to jack up the car to do this)

1. Behind the backing plate there is a little rubber grommet. remove that and you will see the wheel adjuster.

2. Grab a screw driver or something thin and turn the wheel up or down a few turns it wont need much. (I think its different on each side) Repeat on the other side.

3. pull up ur e-brake and it should engage at 5-7 clicks. Mine grabs good at 7 clicks.

:withstupid: And you adjust the drivers side downward, the passenger side upward. You should adjust the brake untill there is a slight drag when spinning the tire.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Slight drag? When you engage the parking brake wouldn't you want it to lock, so it's secure when it's all the way up?

Slight drag with the brake off David :beatstick:

Since we didn't say this before, the e-brake should be adjusted with the brake off.

 Makes more sense now. Thanks.

Just goes to show you that I've never had to adjust my e-brake before. Now if I do I'll be all set.

I was thinking about it afterwords and it would have been a good idea to put in that little tidbit, huh?
