I don't understand how extra gauges is illegal. It's giving the cops too much authority when they probably won't know stock from modified.

I've felt sorry for people that lived in CA for as long as I have been involved with cars.

Unless it's a CSRT, then it's on the left side above the air outlet.

For gauge pods!? What the fuck?

If I took my SRT to Cali i'm sure they would throw me in prison.

Can you get a ticket for exhaust and shit like that if you're traveling?

If you don't live in the state, nor have the car titled there, they can't hit you for those ordnances. At most they may cite you for excessive exhaust noise, but even that would be iffy even for CA.

That kind of stuff is where the car must be legal in the state it is registered in. Out of state cops are not experts or authorities on a particular states laws, and I'm pretty sure they can't enforce them, Chris will correct me on that though

The also can't hold you to their laws.

I frankly don't understand how these laws can actually be passed and why there are not initiatives to repeal most of the idiotic laws. Noise and emission fine, having gauge clusters? come on!

actually, you can be pulled over and cited even if you are registered and titled in another state, it's called "spirit of the law" they can pull you over, but don't have to. I was in the air force stationed in Nevada, had my side windows DARK! Came home to visit my folks, got pulled over three times once I was in Cali, so watch out when you cross borders, they'll getcha!

I lived in San Bernardino for 15 years, within 10 miles of Riverside. I left three years ago. It's getting nuts. I wish they'd get as aggressive about getting unsafe cars off the road. Since there aren't any safety inspections in California, there's a lot of junkers rolling around. BTW, they don't give you a ticket for gauges, having them gives the PD's "probable cause" to pull you over. Just before I left in '05 they were doing the same thing over having windshield banners. It's sad.

As TomZ said, it is not illegal to have gauges or anything of the sort.

Having gauges and the like, and especially loud exhaust is what gives probable cause to pull a vehicle over. Once the vehicle is pulled over, it can be inspected, inside and out, including the engine compartment. If the officer finds something that is illegal, he can then issue a citation or tow the vehicle. (better have CARB numbers for CA.)

The officers are not experts, but atleast here in CA, are required to watch several DVDs and read a couple of booklets on what is and what isnt legal (namely emissions regulations), and what to look for to build PC for a stop. Ive had to watch these videos and read the books, per POST.

Also, as Lamostealth said, an out of state vehicle CAN be pulled over and cited for not having CA legal equipment. It doesnt matter where the car is registered. This works both ways accross boarders with any other state. Its not as likely an officer will issue a citation, but its within his or her rights to issue one. If you are in a state, you have to play by their rules. (and this goes for everything, not just vehicle code requirements)
