THIS $250,000 Ferrari was almost sliced in half yesterday, yet the two men inside astonishingly escaped serious injury.
They had "turned the streets into a racetrack" before crashing into the pole, in Walkerville, just before noon.
The driver, aged in his 30s, and his passenger were treated in Royal Adelaide Hospital for minor injuries.
See the amazing crash pictures
They remained in hospital in a stable condition yesterday. The five-year-old Modena model was wrapped around the pole on Lansdowne Ave.
The car crashed a few minutes after residents said they saw it "zinging" past their homes at high speed.
"I was outside my house talking and we heard something fly up and it was this black Ferrari," Vlado Blazeka said.
"It sounded just like, `zing, zing', as it went past," Mr Blazeka said.
He said he walked around the corner when he saw a firetruck go past and saw the Ferrari smashed against the pole.
He said the men were "lucky to be alive".
"The Stobie split the car in two and it's basically up where the gear stick should be," he said.
Wild at Art manager Lana Errey rushed to help the two men after the accident happened 200m from her gallery.
"I just wanted to do what I could to help. After I checked they were OK I put my hand on the driver's shoulder and said a prayer for them," she said.
Ms Errey, 45, heard the Ferrari go past about 11.30am and described the noise as "deafening".
"It's like they turned the streets into a racetrack," she said.
Bruce Colwell, 60, saw the Ferrari "whiz" down Walkerville Tce and turn right on to Landsdowne Rd minutes before the crash happened.
"It looked like he (the driver) was doing about 150km/h," he said.
Police were investigating the cause of the crash. It was not known if charges would be laid.
Wow!

That's pretty good considering the probable speed. I probably would have died...
Most likely it was some football (soccer) player who was forced to retire and didn't know what to do with all of his money so he tried to kill himself and now that he failed at that he will become a maniac and try to take over the world...

It's a Stobie pole, which is explained here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stobie_pole
A Stobie pole is a power line pole made of two steel joists held apart by a slab of concrete in the middle. It was invented by Adelaide Electricity Supply Company design engineer James Cyril Stobie (1895-1953). He used the materials easily at hand due to the shortage of timber caused by the arid and treeless nature of much of South Australia. His invention of two spare pieces of railway track bolted together with concrete in the middle was patented in 1924.
The first poles were erected in South Terrace, Adelaide in 1924, and were then used extensively in building the electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure throughout the state. The poles carry voltages from 415 to 275,000 volts and come in various sizes from 9 to 35 metres in length. The expected service life of a Stobie pole is predicted to be in excess of 80 years. It is now commonly regarded as a South Australian icon. ETSA Utilities manufactures Stobie poles at a plant in Angle Park, South Australia.
Its modern construction is a composite of two steel beams connected intermittently by bolts to manage compressive buckling, with the gap between the beams filled with concrete. The bolts transfer the shear, with an equal number of bolts above and below ground. The poles are tapered from ground level to the top and the toe. This construction utilises the tensile properties of the steel, giving the poles excellent properties in bending. The poles are fireproof, rotproof, and termiteproof. They are also "car proof", causing enormous amounts of damage to vehicles when collided with.
Some have described them as 'hideous', with attempts to beautify their appearance through Stobie pole gardens and Stobie pole art projects.

Who wants to see if it's semi proof? There is a used Freightliner for sale down the road, only $80k. If we all chip in we will get it and then run it into a pole.
