Yeah. I'm glad I took it for a brand new engine! :P Now I can have a relatively new engine for the next 70,000 miles? lol atleast i don't have to pay for it

EDIT: The knock happened when the engine was started in cold weather and lasted 10-20 mins when driven until completely warmed up. if you have a warranty on it and you're knocking at cold startups.. TAKE IT TO BE CHECKED!! :P

I know piston slap... This was 10x louder then piston slap and piston slap goes away after a min or so.. this lasted 10-20 mins even when driven.

Edit: And if it was JUST piston slap.. would the dealer say I needed a new short block?

just throwing it out there. And most dealers don't know wtf they are doing. A neon short-block is cheap to them. They would rather give you a new one then try and diagnose the problem.

well they could be like my dealer and just fork over a new tranni and then have first gear have no teeth on it.

ture story:
Dealer just put it in a rebuilt tranni and first gear all the teeth were destroyed by the previous owner and when they rebuilt it they forgot aout first. :laughing3: so when they stuck it in my car it would never catch first so after a day they decide that first gear did not work they just handed the new tranni with out checking it out come to find out later they could have saved a $800 by just putting a new first gear in. :laughing3:

Yeah... don't let the 'typical piston slap' decoy get you. if it's louder than it SHOULD be for longer than it should be get it checked. I went to the dealer I bought it from. Kindle AKA 'swindle' but they treat me nice and are getting me a new engine

If the dealership opted for a replacement, I would say that the problem had to be pretty serious since Chrysler would have to okay the action taken due to it being a warranty issue. Dealerships don't go around replacing things to be charitable- they get Chrysler's approval first so that they will be reimbursed for parts and labor.

It's called the parts shotgun ie they cant figure out the problem so they replace everything that may cause it. Happy customers will buy another car from you once this one "starts getting old, worn out, and, hard to find parts for" I hate dealerships.

what it really sounds like is a wrist pin knock. i bought a 1gn today and its making the same loud sound, but everything else internal checks out ok. probly is cheaper/ easier to replace the shortblock.

Whats the deductable you have to pay for the new short block?

I actually like the 7/70 as well, I had my tranmission replaced, even though my car had 73,3XX miles on it...

Are you sure theres no money out of pocket, there is supposed to be a $500ish deductable for warrenty work done between 36,000 and 70,000 miles.

there's a TSB out for 200X to 200X model neons that had engines assembled wrong causing cylinder bores to become oval....

Wrong head bolt torque on some of the bolts perhaps....
Or the honing plate not torqued properly would do the same.

Neither, believe it or not, over torqued trani bolt causing core shift....
But of course I can't find the TSB at this moment, I know I posted it here in the forum somewhere though....

Hmmm, that one would have never crossed my mind! I know on the 3.0 V6 the A/C braket torqued wrong can cause issues, but being on the side of the block, I can see that. Thin wall castings and their double edged swords! Light weight FTW!, and lightweight FTL!

Edit: Writes note to self to have the torque wrench calibrated before clutch change.
