+3k rpm = transmission stress?!?!

Questions about axles, transmissions, differentials, pretty much anything that connects the engine to the wheels, this is the place for those questions.

+3k rpm = transmission stress?!?!

Post by 2001 ACR » Thu Dec 11, 2008 7:03 pm

So I've been accosted by several people (all women...) who regularly tell me that my transmission is going to die if I keep my rpm's above 3k regularly. Is this a bunch of bull-crap? I go 80mph on the hwy which means my rpm sits aroun 4k; and this is 5 days a week.

If any of the more mechanically minded would respond, please do so I can get several people off my back...

Ok.. 99.9% of women aren't mechanically inclined and don't now shit about cars...

Does that answer your question?

if going over 3k RPMs would kill your trans.. wouldn't that be the red line?

EDIT: I'm not being sexist, just stating a fact.. I now there are some women who do know a lot about cars.. just know your source ;)

If you had an ATX and those Babe's were loading down your car, so the lock up wasn't engaged then maybe it might overheat.

But since you have an ACR, it is it's nature, so tell them to =;

Rev-limiter FTW... If they didn't want you going 6.5k rpm, why do they let you

I personally think it is bull shit since I've never lost a tranny and regularly go above 4k rpm.

Agreed, the only way you would damage a tranni, more so ATX, would be to down shift at a high speed. An MTX would prolly hold up well past the engine in that scenario. The actual transmission part of the ATX might survive, but the TC will become a shrapnel balloon.

Thanks for your frankness. I thought it was a load of bull, but needed a second opinion. I figured that if it was bad to go over 4k rpm then the redline would be there instead of at 6500rmp...

I've only blown one transmission. It saw 7K regularly, and the final blow was a 7600 RPM launch, this was in my 98 neon. I just put in my 03 r/t trans (converted for a 1gn), it gets shifted at 7600.

Pretty sure youre valves would float before you revved it highenough to destroy the trans (diff pin aside on a launch)?

Eventually clutches will start to come apart above 8K if they aren't balanced that well.

The T-350 should handle about anything you can throw at it. The only actual trans failures I've seen were on boosted (350hp+) cars and they usually broke the bell housing from the torque launching on slicks. High rpm downshifting can damage the pressure plate and the slave/master cylinders.

Don't forget the diff pin of death. But that's neither an RPM- nor horsepower-related failure.

I will disagree with that, Improper high RPM downshifting will hurt the clutch, however draging the RPM back up with the clutch is much worse for it than a quick blip to bring the engine speed up.
