How do I replace the crank pulley bolt or center motor mount

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

How do I replace the crank pulley bolt or center motor mount

Post by loko498 » Sat Dec 27, 2008 11:20 am

I have a 2000 Neon & the crank pulley bolt is broke. The engine in hanging down to one side. How do I replace the crank pulley bolt?
UPDATE...
I just did some reading & it might be called the "center motor mount".

The bolt is broke off somewhere beacuse when i look in the passenger side wheel well, there is no bolt when I jacked up the engine & its broke off somewhere & dont know. All I know is that its the bolt that holds the engine up. I hope that helps.

Oh there is a big difference between the two, the crank pulley is the round thing that spins at the bottom of the engine, I think what you're talking about is the big bolt that goes through the inner fender, and into a big aluminum bracket that mounts to the side of the engine.

The good news is you can probably fix this... you need to jack up the engine QUITE a bit, and remove the bolts that hold on that aluminum bracket. Follow the instructions here, this is designed for changing timing belts, but the removal of this bracket is part of that process:

http://chronoscender.freeservers.com/ne ... gbelt.html

Once you remove that bracket, you can see if you can get a shop to remove that bolt from it, and then just buy a new mount bolt. Worse case scenario, you have to buy a new bracket and bolt both, and toss the old one in the trash.

Hope that helps.

ohhhhh well that TOP bolt with the torx socket is the mount bolt, the bottom one is the pulley I believe, in which case you have a serious problem. I don't have that cover there on mine, so the pulley is exposed.

Thank you Arro, Thats what it looks like it is. Maybe in the morning Ill try to take that apart & wait till monday to get the correct bolt.
I went to the Dodge parts dealer & they are all closed here in NJ. The auto shop said they will fix it for me on Monday when I get the bolt because they cant get that bolt either 2day with the parts dept being closed.

That puts you back to post #4. If you can get the other half out of the engine mount bracket, you will be golden.

This is where it goes to:

possibly you could get the motor low enough to access the bolt remains through the wheel opening. you may need a jack and by disconnecting the torque struts it may drop enough.

To remove the whole bracket, yes. You must raise and lower the engine to get to all the bolts. But what I was thinking if you could get the broken part out with out having to remove the mount bracket it would save some work.
But, if you are close to a timing belt/waterpump change, now would be the time. Once you have the bracket off, you're halfway there!

You're going to need a floor jack, and a small piece of 2x4 to go on it, put it under your oil pan and slowly raise it up.
