According to this, the '02-'03 were 41te, and the '04-'05 were 40te

I found this information in the neons.org faqs

The newer 4 forward speed, level 1 torque capacity, Transverse mounted, Electronically controlled transmission is shown in the table below. This style of decoding can be used with the rest of the Chrysler-Group automatic transmission line, as well.

41TE Automatic Transmission Specs Application: 2002-2003
Final Drive 3.91
First 2.84
Second 1.57
Third 1.0
Fourth .69
Torque Rating: 245 ft/lbs (approx.)**
Control: Electronic
Used in: All ATX models

** The 41TE Transmission is also used behind the LH cars (300m, Concord, LHS,) PT Cruiser, RS minivans (Caravan, Voyager,) and the JR sedans (Stratus, Sebring) sedans. The motors (2.4L, 2.7L, 3.2L, 3.3L, 3.5L, 3.8L,) in those vehicles push out considerable more torque than the 2.0L

40TE Automatic Transmission Specs Application: 2003+
Final Drive .
First .
Second .
Third .
Fourth .
Torque Rating: . ft/lbs (approx.)
Control: Electronic
Used in: All ATX models

They don't list the gear ratios for the "weaker" trans but im assuming they are the same with just a different set of transfer gears.

Also here is my transmission ID from before the 2003 M/Y change to the 40te and the ID from a 2005

P04800269AC should be the 41TE

P04800312AA should be the 40TE

I am tring to get all the information collected so i can make a list of what trans comes in what cars (not just the neon) with their ID numbers and what Transfer gears are in them.

Chrysler doesn't list a chart of tag #'s for the later transmissions like they used to. For instance, in 2003 there is only one part # listed...5069269AC. That number changes several times after that.
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

well that sucks.
the numbers 269 and AC are on my 03 trans in big bold letters and on the 05 that i looked at they are different.

so is it right that i can assume 269 AC in 03 would be the 41TE and anything else would be the 40TE.

Pretty much. The 41TE was used in 2002-2003. For 2004-2005 they switched to the 40TE. Part # for the 2005 is 5145312AA, btw.

And just to nit-pick...the LH cars used a 42LE trans.

This is the way the trans #'s break down...

41TE = "4"= 4 speed, "1"= torque load (on a scale of 0-9), "T"= Transverse drive (R=rear drive, L=longitudinal drive), "E"= electronic shift (H=hydraulic)
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

Allpar:
The 41TE joined the Neon in 2002, with a gear ratio adjustment in 2003.)
So even those two are different. The change was done to make the ATX more friendly towards the 4 cyl. output.

thanks
mine is 269AC so i have the 41te which is good becasue it is going beheind a 2.4T
just checked the 05 and it was 312AA.

I think the gear ratio adjustment was just the transfer gears. Making them taller( 4.10 i believe) so the 2.0 could actually accelerate instead of the 3.91 in 02-03
