something leaking

Post by DJ CptnCrnch » Mon Jan 12, 2009 4:53 pm

OK after 2 weeks of not driving my car....I recently put my neon back to stock. Took off the mag head, FF header, and R/T intake manifold (which should be up for sale soon  ) My car was running fine, but last night after getting home late from work, i noticed a trail of red going into the garage. It was to dark last night to see anything. Today after looking at it, it seems like its coming from under the engine. It seems like its leaking under the alternator. I plan on jacking it up tomorrow, any clue what might be leaking? Its not the power steering bc i chekced that, and all the other fluids seem to be fine. Maybe a hose cracked in the cold weather?

Thanks

dark red would be eather automatic transmission fluid or possibly brake or clutch fluid

Hmmm. Red fluid near the alt? I'm thinking power steering. The lines run right by the alt. The coolant lines run along the front and towards the drivers side.

Was the fluid fairly dark red?
If I could just figure out how to meld the Outback and the Neon into one car...

I'd say power steering too, I can't think of anything else that would be red, unless you use some kind of crazy synthetic engine oil. Is it possible for the PS fluid to leak out of somewhere (while the car is not running) that wouldn't affect the level in the reservoir?

EDIT: If the PS fluid gets too low you get a CEL right?

Well, if you know what your fluid levels have been running at and know what color they are...

Check the oil, power steering, antifreeze and transmission levels... if any one of them is down this gives you some clues what is happening.

Red and in the general area of the alternator? If you roll with red colored antifreeze you can add the water pump to the list of possiblities.

My first thought was power steering. But check coolant and tranny levels as well.

have you smelt the fluid, if its atf+4 it will stink. Didn't they change to using this in the power steering at one point???!!!
