How to get extension in socket??

Post by clancaster23 » Fri Feb 06, 2009 5:34 pm

Not sure where to post this so I'm just putting it here...

I am going by this: viewtopic.php?t=10341

I can't get the extension to go into the hole in the 13/16th socket. The extension end is just barely too big to go in the hole. What to do?? Do I drill the hole in the socket bigger or what?

Yeah, tho it may be rough on the drill bit depending on the quality of the socket. Or just get another socket that has a larger hole. Spark plug sockets are generally cheaper than normal deep wells due to their lower torque capacity in most cases.

If you are using a 3/8 drive socket, then you may have to go to the 1/2 drive socket like the link in JT's post shows. Wasn't even thinking about that. :tardbang: I made a copy of the tool that Miller tools sells for $65 to do mine. But the socket thing works just as well.

Maybe that's the difference. I got a 13/16ths spark plug socket. Maybe using a deep well 22mm socket, the hole will be bigger on it and the extension will go in?

The main thing would be 1/2" drive, but the other thing is you need the hex drive at the end of the socket like a spark plug socket has. A standard deep well won't have any way to turn it while the 1/4 drive is in the hole.
This is a pic of what I did. I cut a 13/16" 1/2 drive socket in two peices, and had a piece of flat stock welded in between the two parts at work. I cut it just below the square drive.
