How-To Request for Hood Pin Complete Install

Post by Mopar65 » Sat Feb 07, 2009 11:04 pm

Looking for a neon specific How-To on hood pins. I want to get a stainless steel kit, but I need a good write up on how to properly drill the hood, make the lanyards, etc. I know there are a few people on here who have them so let me know. Thanks.

Pretty sure this is where this post goes according to BRR in the How-To Section.

You might try PMing lilsparkplug, she's the only one with pins that I can think of.

No, I've had hood pins since '07.

Look at my sig pic.

Edit: a 2000 really needs it when you have a fiberglass hood or a CF hood with a fiberglass skeleton underneath (which has the latch), because it doesn't sit flush.... lots of air forces under the front of the hood as the hood forms part of the air dam, unlike the Mark II bumper.

I have an SRT-4 CF hood, so the bulge in the middle makes placement of pins tricky. I found the best place is here:

(you might have to click the pic on here to enlarge it)

I have the Sparco-style hood pins...

The pins themselves are mounted on the radiator core support here:

I drilled holes for the bolts to slide through (the pins are threaded down the length on my style pin. They come with nuts to lock the bottom and top to hold the pins in position. You use the bolts and the threaded pin length to get the correct height and angle of the slot for the pin to slide through.

Here is a great how-to that pretty much what I did, other than different location of the pins:

Hope this helps.

FYI, you may look into Lockable hood pins if you remove the hood latch mechanism.

Because our hoods are sloped where the core support is, the slider pins end up going in at an angle, and you can't use them to engage the hood firmly down. So they work better as more of a safeguard/backup for the stock latch. I would recommend against removing the stock latch.

At least for an 00-01, but probably for all of them.

I like the hood pins that are on some Mustangs. There more like a lock, you have to twist the knob to open it. I don't think they have those as a kit though.

I don't think those would work because of the angle of our hoods as they sit above the radiator core support.

You can see where mine are located in these pictures:

You just trim a bit of the headlight mount to get them to fit right. And the hole on the underside of the hood needs to be larger than the top, otherwise, because of the slope, the shaft won't slide through.

I wonder if we could just replace the bump stops with the hood pins like the linked VW tutorial suggested? Your hood pins are right beside them anyway.
