Things to do with tax return:

Pay off credit card
Pay for wedding bands
Buy a new bed
put a chunk into her diamond
pay insurance.

Yea it was fun the one year i wasnt aware i wasnt on the real payroll, so i had a sudden 2g's to pay...which i didnt have whatsoever.

Not to mention the week i bought my car i got laid off and i got my tax forms the week after that. Talk about a double whammy.

I forgot to switch my with holdings after I quit my second job in February so it was taking out an extra $100 a month or more.

Add in the $7500 new home tax credit, it should be sizable.

Isn't that tax credit a temporary loan? Or is it actual money in your pocket?

Yeah, its a loan.

However, it is interest free and the payback is $500 per year for 15 years, or until you sell the house. When you sell the house the capitol gains are used to pay off the loan, unless you don't make enough in capitol gains to pay it off then the debt is relieved.

Owning a home (aka, paying stupid amounts of interest), and having a wife finishing a masters degree should help this year. Next year, I'll get to add a dependant...and that will be awesome.

Anyone who pays too much in payroll tax is essentially providing the government with an interest free loan until tax return time.

Then you get all excited when you get your tax refund... when it was your money to begin with and has not been working for you.

It would be better to start an automatic savings program into a high interest savings account where you have access to the money anytime you need it (and not just at tax refund time) and earn interest.

Now, normally I charge for advice like this but am providing for free here as a courtesy to 2GN members.

Yes, I'm full of it...

Don't worry, I plan on getting professional advice to minimize with holdings. Then my paychecks will increase and hopefully we can get to where I want to be savings wise before we pop a baby out.

Hopefully by doing all that, it will put us in a good position to get rid of the Jeep and buy a brand spankin new Caliber.
