3 Codes. Drivin me mad!

Post by speedballer4life » Thu Feb 12, 2009 3:36 pm

I have an 03' SXT that is showing 3 codes.
P0440- Evap System Failure
P0441- Evap incorrect purge flow
P0499- NVLD high voltage

To me these would point to replacing the NVLD pump.
But could it possibly also be a short somewhere?
I've checked all vacuum hoses and electrical connections involved with the evap system and found nothing out of the ordinary.
I've had the code on the vehicle for about a year, maybe year and a half and at first it started out intermittent.
i tightened the gas cap and cleared the code and it'd come back on a couple weeks later.
I cleared the code recently and it came back the next morning.
I talked to a dodge tech who said this is because the evap purge system only tests after the vehicle has sat for a long period of time, like overnight.

For any of the three codes it basically points to either a leaking vacuum line, failed gas cap, NVLD pump, or Evap purge valve.

What you said is correct. Naturally, check the less expensive things first. I've got the same car and I've had an intermittent P0441 since I bought it. I may see it twice in a week, then not see it again for 6 months. No rhyme or reason to when it decides to pop up. I removed my purge valve and manually tested it with 12V and it was fine. I replaced the gas cap and that didn't do it (good to do anyway).

The fact that you've actually got a code for the NVLD rather than just the typical useless P044x codes makes me think that the NVLD would be a good bet. But always check the other stuff too.

I had the P0441 for a while, started as intermittent and then stayed on. It wasn't until fairly recently that the other two codes popped up.

Really... hmmm... now I'm very interested as far as what your problem might be. I wonder if the NVLD can die slowly. I've never gotten any other codes than the P0441 and it hasn't come on in a couple months. In the time I've had my car, it hasn't come on any more/less frequently, just totally random.

I HAVE heard of them going out slowly. Me and another tech I work with cleared the codes on it the other day, and they stayed off all day, first thing the next morning they popped right back up after the evap system was tested. I believe the car is under an extended warranty still, but i'll have to find out what my deductible is on it. I would pay i think 46 for the NVLD pump or 43 for the purge solenoid. I may just try one (starting with the NVLD) and see what happens.

The fact that the code didn't reappear until the next day could well be normal. PCM testing of the NVLD is done according to various time and ignition-on/off parameters to test for vacuum changes due to ambient temperatures.

I've seen the thread on that hose and checked it thoroughly. Besides I don't see any reason that hose leaking would cause a high NVLD voltage. This isn't something I'm too eager about at the moment because a have front brake pads and rear wheel cylinders i' replacing on this check. I will keep looking at the car and testing what i can when it's slow here in the shop. Unfortunatly the Ford diagnostic tools they have here at my shop don't hook up to my car. otherwise I could just hook a scan tool to it, run an evap system/ purge system test and be done with it lol
