I think that's a key lock. I noticed it on an SRT-4 I test drove once. After I killed the engine, I couldn't pull the key out until I hit that button. I could be wrong though.

Yes, it's the key release switch / button, on all MTX Neons.

I did the samething!..I have a ATX ..and test drove a SRT-4, then could get the key out!

What is the purpose of this?... and why only on the MTX?

..is it just an extra reminder that u have to put an MTX in gear or set the parking brake before u get out?..so it doesn't start rolling?

(the ATX has to be in park before the key will come out...)

every car I've ever owned has had a key release. Have no idea why, nor do I care. I don't even realize that I hit the button.

When I saw the original post, I knew what it was but didn't know why. I had to think really hard to remember that my car has this, lol.

It might be a mtx specific feature on the neon, but many cars out there have one whether it's atx or mtx. I believe it's similar to the way you have to push the key in and turn with the non-button ignitions. The push in style ignitions can be faulty and lock up with the key inside, I've seen it happen to a lot of fords.

I think it can be removed, I know it can be on the ranger at least. Should just be a retainer attached to the button to lock the cylinder.

my 95 highline had it and after awhile you will get used to it and it becomes second nature. You won't even notice yourself hitting the button as you turn your key back.

probably not considering with most cars the button cannot be depressed when the key is in the on position.

The only purpose it serves is to prevent accidental locking of the steering while while driving. The engine can still be shut off, but it shouldn't let it go to the lock position.
Don't try this while driving to test it.

Basically if the engine needs to be turned off for say a fuel line rupturing, you can still do it but in your "paniced state" you won't lock the wheel turning it back quickly. This of course is defeated, because like already mentioned we turn it off pressing the button and not really putting any thought to it. Our brains are already programmed to do it.
I know I don't turn it back, press the button then continue. I press the button then turn.
Engineers must be smarter than the subconscious. :D

ya, well my neon has a custom ignition (still got the button) but after reading this post i dont need to push the button to shut my car off and remove the key, i can even remove the key while driving. HOWEVER if i just shut the ign off and remove the key, ANY KEY that will slide in the ignition will start my car. The only time i have to push the button is to turn the ign further back.. make sense?
