I know I'm not a mechanic but....

Post by OverDrive418 » Mon Feb 16, 2009 1:03 pm

Does this even kinda make sense?
I took my car in this morning to get the trans flushed and oil change and asked them to change the oil pan gasket which appears to be the cause of a small leak.
They give me an estimate of $257 parts and labor.

I get a phone call a few minutes ago and the guy says that yes it was the gasket and to replace it is $157 parts and labor.
I asked if that was included in the original estimate.
No, its in addition to the original estimate, do I still want it done.

Hell no! I can do it myself for about $25 with a OEM gasket in about 30 minutes or less. I just like being clean and hassle free and since the car was already there...

And heres the kicker:
I said go ahead and do the trans flush and I'll do the rest.
He said you want the trans service and oil change?
No just the trans service.
We already did the oil change....

......

..........what?
We already did the oil change.
You already did the oil change?
Yes sir.
But I needed the oil pan gasket replaced also, how, why.... do the trans service, I'll be there shortly. (hang up)

So I know I'm not ASE certified or anything but don't you need to do a gasket replacement BEFORE you do an oil change since you have to PULL THE WHOLE FRIGGIN OIL PAN OFF TO DO IT?! Then change the oil? Or is there some new antigravity device that will allow new oil to float in space while you replace the gasket?

Wow. I wonder if they just planned on draining the oil and dumping back in. Stories like this make me never ever want to take my car to a mechanic.

Hahaha...

Now, this could be a miscommunication between the so called "service advisors" at the counter and the mechanics.

I had mine done last fall... did not cost anywhere near that.

So apparently their plan was to drain the "new" oil they changed into a drainpan, proceed with the gasket replacement, then pour the "new" oil back into the car. So basically I'd be paying new oil prices for used oil that mixed with and sat in whatever crap was in their drainpan while the gasket was getting replaced!

Taking them to small claims court, see if they can convince the judge this makes sense. Even if I somehow lose it'd be worth it!

I lolled at this.

It's like saying I broke a cup filled with water, yet I need to fix the water first to drink it.

I'll pour the water into my shoe while I fix the cup, then pour it into the cup...mmmmmm, refreshing! :tardbang:
