Help Fast Please! Engine problem

Post by 2001 ACR » Thu Feb 19, 2009 4:11 pm

I have an 01 ACR with 125k miles on it. I was driving to school today and when I put it in neutral at a stop sign, the speedometer jumped around between 400k and 1200k rpm until I turned it off. I'm getting the CEL with codes 1684 and 0703. What's wrong with my car?!?!

Search reveals:
P0703(M) Brake Switch Sense Circuit Incorrect input state detected in the brake switch circuit. (Changed from P1595).

P1684 Battery Disconnected in the last 50 Starts The battery has been disconnected within the last 50 starts.

The second one is no big deal and the first one... no clue. I wouldnt worry to much about it. btw search next time first.

I couldn't find the 0703 code on any of the lists... where did you find it? And what does it mean?

I wish I could get my own speedometer to go 400k. I'd drive to the moon for an afternoon visit.

Muwahhhaaahh! I was going to comment, but refrained. That is better than what I would have come up with!

Have you started your car since? Does it still keep doing it? Is it just your tach, or does the engine idle speed change? 400RPM is in stalling territory, how does it sound? It's possible you've got a vacuum leak, although I'm not sure if that would account for the bouncing back and forth, just make the RPMs go way up.

Go turn the car on, see if it does it again. Also, does it do it when you're in neutral/clutch in only?

Well, it hasn't done it again. But the 0703 code is still there. I took it to Auto Zone just to make sure that was the only code showing up. I wonder if a brake switch circuit malfunction is something I can fix if I just get the part.

When it happened I could actually hear the engine reving up and down on its own while in neutral, it sounded weird too, but can't explain what it sounded like. Almost like it was suffocating or something...

I know you said you had 125k miles on the car.... have you done the proper maintenance? For example the timing belt?

I had the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, plugs, etc all taken care of 3 months ago.

Just for reference, you don't need to take it to autozone to get the codes.

iv had the vacc lines fall off at random times which have caused similar problems. i would guess the "suffocating" noise could be your engine struggling not to die at 400 rpm.

The brake switch that the code is referring to would most likely be the one on the pedal, which is used for your brake lights. May also be ABS related, though it would probably say so in the code explanation. I highly doubt this issue is related to that code anyway so disregard it for now. Sounds like either an IAC, TPS, MAP, or vacuum related issue. You should get a code for one of those sensors though, which is weird.
