2GN to 1GN valve cover swap

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

2GN to 1GN valve cover swap

Post by Arro » Mon Feb 23, 2009 2:15 pm

I obtained a '98 SOHC valve cover, and I want to swap it. I searched around, but the info is scattered, and I still have some questions.... so I started this thread today to contain all the necessary info in one place.

For starters, some people might ask, "why you would want to switch to a 1GN valve cover?"

Well, the answers are as best as I understand them, and anyone who knows better info is encouraged to chime in.

Function: The oil baffle system on the 1GN valve cover is superior to the 2GN. Switching to a 1GN valve cover means that hard cornering doesn't spill out the oil like the original.

Looks: The 2GN NON-Magnum valve cover is plastic. The 1GN part is cast aluminum, meaning you can powdercoat or even polish or chrome it. People have done some nice paint jobs on the 2GN valve cover, but because it's plastic, your options are limited.

You want the '96-99 year valve cover, because the '95 has a strange bracket system and different thread pitch on the bracket bolts that also hold down the middle of the valve cover. Getting a '96-99 means you'll get it to fit.

As an alternative, you can go with the Magnum valve cover, but it's harder to find, and I'm not certain it has as good an oil baffle as the 1GN design.

GASKET:

The 1GN gasket is different than the 2GN one.

So I assume you need the 1GN gasket.

NOW here are the questions...

HOW do you hook up the hoses?

What other facts do we need to know to make this valve cover work?

ALL HELP APPRECIATED!
Drive it like you stole it, and work on it like you married it.

The port coming from in front of the coil pack goes to a vaccum source (intake manifold plenum).

The port on the "back" of the valve cover goes to a filtered air source. This can be from the regular air filter or a special small air filter can be placed on it. The air source must be open to the atmosphere.

You'll need a 1gn pcv check valve. It will need to be place between the port in front of the coil pack and the vaccum source (intake manifold plenum).

That would be this:

PCV1206

Which end connects to the valvecover?

I take it this would connect to the vacuum port just after the inlet that the bellows tube connects to....?
