key hole is dead

Post by InfinityAudio » Tue Feb 24, 2009 11:35 pm

I dont' know if you call it like this I used google translator for this: barrel. It's actually in what the key enter and turn to unlock the trunk.

Well mind is dead du to rust and calcium. What can I do to change it. Can I buy a new one, or can I buy a new one and stay with the same key?

thannks for the answer

you can get a new lock cylinder but i dont know how you would go about keying it to your existing key.. maybe the dealership could do it or a locksmith.

my trunk lock is also dead but due to a key breaking off and being unable to get the damn thing out.. heh..

if you go to the dealership they key the cylinder right there, i had it done it takes really no time at all, just bring them in your key and they will do it for you.

Just go to the junkyard and take a lock cylinder off any neon. Bring it to your dealership (who shouldn't charge you) or a locksmith with your key. They'll swap the tumblers out in less than 5 minutes so it will work for you. I just did it for my locking glove box two weeks or so ago.

open your trunk, there is a u-shaped clip that holds it into the trunk, just like the side marker lights have on the front bumper. Take the lock out and fill it with wd-40, and let it sit for a few hours, try turning it after this, if that doesn't work, heat it with a torch for a few seconds and try again. I had this same problem at the start of winter, and heating it with some oil in it, fixed it right away. You will want to put the lock cylinder in a vice, or something that can hold it tight while you try to turn it with your key. Hope this helps, let me know if you have more questions

Tried a few things myself, before i just said screw it and took it out of the trunk to do what i described above. The propane torch i used got it pretty hot, and in about 10 seconds it was un-seized.

autozone sells replacement locks + keys for most American cars. just get one from over there. i bought one for my friends Saturn for $17. the dealer wanted $30 labor to re-key + 100 for the new lock (that's with me installing it)....so it could get pricey over there.

I'm thinking about doing that, but at the same time I'm not sure if I want the glovebox keyed to the car. I keep guns and such in there, and it's nice that if someone steals the car, they can't easily get to whatever I've got in the glovebox. Then again, I leave the key sticking out, and people hit their shins and knees on the damn thing. Last guy who sat in my front seat bent the damn thing, so I dunno.

Here is a suggestion.

Remove the lock and shave the hole. If you have an alarm use it for the trunk pop.!
