stock R/T 22mm front sway came stock on '04 sxt???

Post by sneakers O'toole » Tue Mar 17, 2009 2:42 pm

..Because I didn't put it there lol. I thought after a certain year ('02?) they stopped upgrading the front sway bar with the "sport appearance package".
I just measured my front with the cresent wrench and tape measure method 3 times and it read 22mm every time.. and I used the same method to measure the srt front i have sitting here so I know its accurate. I thought stock sxt fronts were 20?

I have seen different sized front sway bars on 2nd gen Neons (excluding the SRT).

You may be right about going to a larger bar after a particular model year....

I was at a junkyard last fall, and found a 2nd gen Neon with a thicker front sway bar than the others. ( I *think* it was an '03 or '04, I don't remember.)
I *almost* took it home, but the junkyard had a PT Cruiser with the even larger front bar, so I took that one, instead. :D

I am sure someone here knows when they went to a "larger" front sway bar on the 2nd gen Neons, or which cars had it, etc.

I went out and measured the front bar on my '01 and sure enough its 22mm.

When I originally measured mine I came up with 22. But once I truly cleaned it up for my new poly bushings it was only 20 mm.

You might have to clean it up real well and then measure.

Maybe they were just running short on the 20mm when you car was going through the production line. Or maybe it was a lucky mistake by one of the workers. One of the only times you could say the "human error" factor actually worked in your favor.

The best way is to clean any rust off, and use an open end wrench to gauge the size.

So, what size front bar came on which cars ?? :-k

I know that on the 1st gen Neons, the size on the front bar varied depending upon the car having a rear swaybar, or not.
If the car came with a rear bar, the front bar was 2mm thicker than the non-rear bar cars.

Perhaps it was the same with the 2nd Gen Neons ??
I've seen a lot of 2000-2002 Neon with a rear bar; the 2003-up Neons don't seem to have them.
Maybe they went to a heavier front bar in 2003, to make up the difference ?
Or did the rear-bar cars get the heavier front bar ??

I don't know man, I thought, along with others, that the '03+ non R/T-SRT cars had a 20mm front and no rear bar. so i went and got a 14mm for the rear on my car, thinking the front was 20 :tardbang: and wondered why it didn't do much.

Standard: 20mm front / 15mm rear (rear was only on early 2gns)

RT/ACR: 22mm front / 19mm rear (there was a sport suspension option that gave these to non-rt/acr neons)

SRT: 24mm front / 17mm rear

the confusion with me is that i thought DCx stopped doing that on '03+ regular neons.. and also my friends '03 se had a 22mm front as well.. hmm.
