backfire then no power

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

backfire then no power

Post by seisephiroth » Wed Mar 18, 2009 9:44 am

the car absolutely will not turn on, no dash, no capacitor no nothing, all fuses in dash panal and engine bay boxes are still good, is there a fusable link between the dash and harness, or any other fuses that aren't in the two listed places, i've been told to check the starter but i'm not sure if that will yeild any results. the battery is very strong, it tests at 14 volts. it did this after a backfire

Did you check for voltage in the PDC/interior fuse box?
The backfire may be a result of losing voltage to the PCM via a bad connection, then breifly gaining it back, and losing it again. The fusible link at the starter will not keep the fuse box/PDC from getting voltage. It will let the battery not be charged, but the voltage is good, so that's not the issue. Check each fuse for voltage at the little spot on the top of each one, both sides. A test light works great for this. There may be a feed wire that has failed underneath.

backfire may have hurt a sensor, esp the map. You need to check them. other than that i dunno, had to blow up some electrical component.

Does your car have an ASD (auto shutdown) relay? If it does, it might have gone bad. It would be in the engine-bay fusebox.

Hopefully you have another relay of the same type being used for something else, like the horn relay or A/C compressor clutch relay. If they're the same, just swap them and see if you get power.

Or just pull out the fuse and check it for voltage.

ASD relay is the same.

Nutmeg,
The fuse would only tell him that the relay is getting power, (still important) but won't tell him if it is switching the power on.
