I want to learn but...

Post by Dimas » Thu Mar 19, 2009 3:42 am

Ok so, I finally picked up a front and rear lip for my 03 R/T. Problem is they didn't have the primer setup at moparsupercenter.com, my fault for not searching enough I suppose.

Now I have two choices, try and learn how to paint theses things myself, obviously with some practice first. Or pay someone to do.

Now I want to learn but don't know where to start. I know my paint code is PYH lol and all and read most of the threads about primering and LSP and others way of doing it. Anyone know any good books on the subject or anything? If I'm gonna do it myself I would take my time and do it over the summer once school is out so I won't feel rushed at all so no worries there.

My only problem with taking it to a body shop is obviously the problem of them effing the hell up you know, just don't wanna overpay and the it looks like shit. Anyone know where I can pick up this paint PYH anyway, if so how much does it run? How would you guys think I need to redo the front bumper (looks like crap up close) the front and rear lip kit. *sigh* Wish I could do everything with the snap of a finger bah!

Any reputable shop should do a nice job and have some sort of warrenty. There are some good books on painting out there, i have a few, and have done a car but never bumpers. They are a little tricky since the paint doesn't stick unless you get the plastic scuffed up WELL. Then you need to use a flex additive with the paint so that it doesn't crack and flake off with the bumper flexing.

I'll start calling around and pricing it out, if I were to try and do it myself would I be saving kind of a bit or would I end up spending the same amount of having some "pro" do it.

In reality you need two different paints for the whole car and the urethane parts. If you add your own flex additive to the color you have had mixed the color will be off. So you have to buy a quart or so of your color paint premixed with it, be sure to mension that to who ever you get the paint from. When I mixed my color for the interior pieces they had two formulas, which differed slightly because one had the additive and made up for it by adding a little bit more of certain colors.

flex additives are a waste.it just takes good prep and proper techniques backed with quality products and it will be fine,i hear so many people swear by the crap but it is simply not needed.now let the flaming begin

Does 500 sound good for redo a front bumper(lil paint damage that's noticable) and the lip front/back. Bascially gonna have to prep the everything and paint it yellow, but he says he mixes his own paint, as well tells me that the color on the plastic won't match the metal or something. I"m sitting there tellin myself well it seems the factory was about to match it pretty damn well. you know? what are you thought?

Yea that's what I figured you know, but the dude seemed bent on tellin me that it won't match well, but doesn't want to use factory paint, he mixes his own he says which I think is stupid when I offered to bring the paint, I guess he's just more interested in money I suppose. Can I buy the paint from the dealership or where do I have to go?

If the shop mixes the paint for you it will be cheaper. Lets say you go out and buy and pint of paint, which is around 60-70 bucks. Thats 16oz and is more than enough, the shop should only have to mix 1/2 pint at most which will save you roughly 30 bucks. Anyway If you go otu and buy the wrong paint, how would you get the money back for it??
