fuel filter question

Post by Xtian » Fri Mar 20, 2009 11:10 am

Went to a local store to get one, because my car is sluggish, they said that the fuel filter for the Neon is "not serviceable"
they said to take a look at the map sensor, o2 sensor and the catalyc converter, but is that true?

I thought the filter is in the access cap on the tank? You should be able to swap them out... I could be wrong though...

Fuel filter assembly's part of the fuel pump on 2gn's. You'd have to drop the tank, pull out the fuel pump, then the fuel filter; or at least pull out the rear seat cushion to get access to the fuel pump. Not very fun to do if you HAD to. But they were right in what they told you. Definitely check the 02 sensors, the throttlebody (see if it's gunked up) and maybe the cat if it's clogged. If the map sensor's shot, that's an easy enough thing to replace, though IIRC you'd get a CEL from that. But start small: have you checked the basics like plugs wires and coil??

A few ppl on here have reached around the top of the tank, and removed the pump assy. I have never done it, so I can't verify from experience. The filter is part of the pressure regulator. It is available seperately from the dealer, but like said, I would check other stuff first.

There is no access under the rear seat in the floor, unless it was done by someone other than the factory.

Pretty much you'd have to get the whole assembly that enters into the gas tank. You do have to drop the tank, which is also best done when near empty.
Supposedly the filter isn't meant to need changing with this design....supposedly.

It is a PITA to do (had to fix mine twice - got it wrong the first time when I swapped to the SRT filter).

Truth.

Even if there was, it wouldn't be of much help anyway. The access to the pump assembly and whatnot is on the side of the tank.

Incorrect.

You're talking about the strainer sock, which pretty much has zero filtering ability unless you're filtering rocks.

The filter is integrated into the pressure regulator. It takes about 15min to change, costs about $60.

Before going through all the trouble to change the fuel sock or accummulator/filter, I would check the fuel pressure first.
Chances are, that is not the problem......

It's more likely, that the 'stooopid and simple' stuff needs to be checked or cleaned first......
Change / clean spark plugs every 10,000 miles or so, spark plug wires, O2 sensor, dirty air filter, dirty injectors, and dirty throttle body....

If you have high enough miles, you might want to run Seafoam through the intake.

Item 5) Filter/regulator

Definately in the tank.
Well the debate continues

according to this - http://forums.neons.org/viewtopic.php?p ... 3e7399215d

#2 is listed as “FILTER KIT, Fuel” and #5 is listed as “FILTER, Fuel Pressure Regulator”. Notice the location of the #5, it is on the internal side of the mounting flange of the fuel pump, meaning its internal to the fuel tank and you would have to pull the fuel pump to get to it. THIS DIAGRAM IS INCORRECT, the “FILTER, Fuel Pressure Regulator” is mounted on the mounting flange of the fuel pump on the external side. The incorrect diagram will lead the parts counter personnel to tell you that you have to remove the fuel pump to change the filter and/or they will try to give you #2. Despite what they tell you, tell them you want Part # 4546610. If they insist it won’t work, just have them pull a new fuel pump from the shelf, and look at it, they will find Part #4546610 mounted on the exterior of the mounting flange of the pump.

ok, so just to be 100% certain;

it is EXTERNAL of the tank, not internal.
