New to the Magnum

Post by phenomeneon21 » Sun Sep 11, 2005 2:32 am

Alright, after much searching and researching of parts for my '02 R/T, I feel very lost and very confused. There are so many parts and so many upgrades for this car that is overwhelming! I don't know where to start! I went to modernperformance.com and read there recommended buildup, but I just don't know. Can someone please give me a good start for mods, I know most of you will say just keep searching, but I'm afraid I'm all searched out, I've read this forum inside out, haha. I'm still trying to learn the mechanics of the car, I'm afraid without that knowledge these mods won't do me any good! I'm trying to find a good mix of oomph mods (things that'll give it a bit of kick) and some hold ya there mods (things that'll hold me to the road). If someone could just give a basic list of good mods to start with, that would be a big help, and I realize this is a huge chunk of text, so thanks for reading and thanks for the advice if anyone is willing to give some, haha.

the Cold air intanke is an excellent first mod.

Under drive pulley throws codes on 2002 neons so not an option for you.

and well, modern performance mod list is pretty good.

id like to disagree with modern's "recommended" list for the following reasons

2. The magnum header is a very efficient design that is produced by borla anyway. buying a new 'borla' header will yield little, if any, gains..... get a longtube header if possible

3. The Thermal R/D muffler (and any 60mm t/b for that matter) dont make the much power. on an otherwise stock engine, each of these mods make only about 3-4whp. im sure the thermal sounds nice but i cant justify $335 (shipped) for 3-4hp... if you must, get a trubendz for $265 shipped, or even get one built at an exhaust shop using a magnaflow muffler for a camaro/firebird to save $$$

i def agree on the intake and udp (too bad you have an '02)

Don't think that since it thorws code and the check engline light comes on that you're out of luck on the UDP. You can still install it and it'll work fine, you'll just have to get used to the CEL light being on sometimes.

Oh i wasnt aware that they recommended exhaust + header.

Keep the stock header, hell i would even keep the stock exhaust and go directly to Camshaft + compression

i run desktop dyno for my '01 R/T and it so close its scary (afterall, everything that occurs in the engine is relative to physics and math especially so its very close)... anyway, i tried diff things such as the crane 14 and 16 cam, 10.5 and 12.5 c/r, and take into account the effect of the af/x-r ecu rev-limit of 7800rpm. dont get me wrong, the 14 and 16 cam are an awesome choice as far as an NA magnum engine goes, but the 12.5:1 c/r kills over any of the other combos. the crane 16 and 60mm t/b makes anywhere from 12-20whp @ 7500... but the 12.5:1 pistons however make around 15whp from 6800+ AND you dont sacrifice your low rpm tq.... just some things to think about

af/x-r ecu
16 cam
12.5:1 pistons

yum :)
