Strut question...

Post by Sabersoul » Sat Apr 11, 2009 9:22 pm

I've got 94.5K miles and recently I've noticed when going over speed bumps that I can hear my struts working. These are still the stock struts and I've been using the stock springs, never changed them. I haven't seen any leaks or anything on them, but could this be a sign that I should replace my struts?

You can hear them working? What exactly does that sound like? :)

So long as you don't see any fluid or external signs of wear, I wouldn't worry about it. Is the ride bouncy?

A little more than it used to be, but only over fairly harsh bumps (like damn speed bumps). It seriously sounds like gas expelling and sucking in depending on which way it's traveling.

I know the sound you are talking about, it is normal when the strut shaft is moving up and down. it sounds like a hissing sound....that's how they should sound...

if your car is not bouncy, and you don't see any oil leaks or residue then they should be fine. my stockers were still strong at 130,000 miles.....it depends on your driving and the roads you drive on mainly......

Thanks. Hopefully they'll stay just fine then until I can afford a trip to MP and start getting stuff to lower the car. It's nice that they're only about a 30 min drive away and I don't have to pay shipping. :D

Press down on the front fender (not where it will bend) and then release. If the car bounces more than roughly 1.5 times your struts are most likely shot and in need of replacement.

On top of that with 95k miles on them they are probably on their last legs or out the door already.
