DIY oil change...

Post by Anonymous User » Wed Sep 14, 2005 10:31 pm

so my car is in a real need of an oil change. and instead of letting some person do it at the oil change station i want to do it myself. i tihnk i got an idea of what i need to change the oil, and what parts would be helpful. would i need the items i list to change my oil myself?

some kind of ramps or jacks [thinking of rhino ramps or whatever its called]
engine oil [ i was thinking of using Mobil 1 5w-30 Synthetic]
oil filter [ K&N ]
basic tool set.

is this all i need? and yes, i am a n00b at oil changes. trying to learn now so i dont have to later.

yeah sounds about right, you may also find an oil filter wrench helpful. Remember to put a dab of new oil on the oil filer gasket for eaiser removal next time.
Justin- I have nothing but smart ass remarks to add.

Another great thing to have is an oil drain pan... specifically the kind that has a funneled top and a cap, as well as a pour spout.

Sort of like this, though I've seen these in round varieties as well.

If you plan to always do it yourself, there's a neat device from Fram that replaces your oil drain plug with one that lets the oil out when you screw on a special "drain tube". I can usually change my oil and filter with no tools at all, unless the oil filter or the cap covering the "drain plug" is too tight.

Also, some places will accept your used oil for free. Advance Auto does, at least in CT.
