any one tried it?

Post by blueneo03 » Mon Apr 27, 2009 8:18 pm

has anyone tried to make the 3rd brake light into a L.E.D. brake light.. not like just replace the bulb to an led one, but like actually making it into a true led like on some of the new caddys and such

I did this... have posted it before...

all I did was hot glue a L.E.D. alarm scanner inside the stock red lens and hook all the power wires up to the brake light circut that was there.

some say it's illegal, but I've had it for years and have cops behind me day and night without getting pulled over.

I'd be ok with just one row, I actually think it looks better than 2 rows, but it's not as bright.

If you solder 4 in a row you don't need resistors. It's simple math - 12V : 4 = 3V. And now look how much the LEDs need. I guess 3V is okay...
The board? Just take standard board for selfwiring. (Whatever you call that...):

alright. thanks man.. i can wire.. but i dont really know resistors and such... but you wouldnt need any resistors? or 1 every 4?

it's like i said. math. you only need resistors if the voltage is not the same. Example: The LED needs 3 V and you have 12 V. Then you must know the needed current to calculate the resistor.
If you only wanna install 1 LED (like in switches) you need a resistor (for blue LEDs = 420 Ohm). But for reds it's different, they need lower voltage...
But if you connect them in row - the voltage must be added - 4x3 = 12 V...

Yea but a vehicle with the engine running puts out a max of 14.5 volts. If you wanna try to use the board I recommend using inlie resistors. Depending on the size of the led and the color they use different ohms.

On another note the 3rd brake light will only be on for a min at a time. I dont see the voltage spike being a problem. If you wanna try it go for it.

with 14.5V you have 3.6V / LED - should be no problem...
