A little color under the hood...

Post by suave23 » Thu Apr 30, 2009 11:45 pm

Well, after being tired of the nasty looking stock valve cover, I decided to get a powdercoated one. I tried to do something I've never seen before, and with some help from the powdercoater, I got exactly what I was looking for.

Out with the old..

In with the new..

Hard to see the sparkle in it, night garage pics FTL. When I have a chance to clean the car up again I'll try to take some day shots that capture the sparkle in it. Here's one that the "unknown" powdercoater sent me before he mailed it out...

As you may have guessed, I got it from Unknown Coatings. The work is fantastic, the price was more than reasonable, and I had great customer service. I'd highly recommend him.

Not bad, not bad at all. perhaps you should put some red on the SRT4 fuel shroud dealy. May brighten the pics up some. What ya think?

The fuel injector cover? I've been trying to figure out what to do with it. I'm thinking I'll just paint the letters either blue or orange, or I'll get a carbon fiber one.

I also need to do something with the intake manifold and the cold air intake. I thought about just sandblasting the cold air intake to give it a rough silver look.

The VC looks great but the MSD clashes with it now because of the red/orange.

:withstupid: Get a stock coil...MSD is basically a stock unit with an MSD red cover.

I agree 100%. I still have my stock coil and wires, I just haven't thrown them back on yet. I might do the stock coil with the MSD wires, I don't know.

I would keep MSD for the simple fact that it is a newer unit, even if it is just basically stock coil that is red. The red and orange doesnt look bad as they are basically the same color lol. Don't feel bad about the red to orange color. I have the MSD coil and granatelli wires... Red MSD to Blue wires lol :(

I recently painted my fuel covor stock. Just red lettering and black around. I bet that would look pretty good. You could also try and match that orange, which would look INTENSE!

This is what I did with my fuel cover, just so you can get an idea of something different.

My stock coil and wires only have 19K on them, so I'm sure they still have plenty of life left.

I'd really like to match the orange on the injector cover, I just don't know how close I'd be able to get it. It would bug the shit out of me if it was off just a shade, which is why I think I'll just do a carbon fiber injector cover.

MSD is not just a red stock coil, if it were it wouldn't cause the misfire issues that have been so rampant. They don't occur on every car that has it, but a good majority it causes more ignition issues than it fixes. The stock coil and the granatelli coil are just about the same. I would go back to the stock coil and wires....then again I steer clear of MSD at all costs due to it's problematic past with SRT-4s.

Regardless of that.....the VC looks amazing.

Thanks Crystal, it's really one of those things you have to see in person, it's really hard to capture the sparkles in action on camera. And like I mentioned above, I'll probably end up putting the stock coil back on, not sure on whether I'll put the stock wires back on yet.

I was originally wanting an NYG valve cover because of the heritage factor that Neon nerds would love and the fact that I'd never seen an SRT do an NYG cover, but I'm glad Shawn talked me into going with the Pumpkin Orange with the Starburst Clear.

It isn't Hemi Orange, and a LOT of people did it before Brodie did it.

Been talking to him about coating a manifold in silver with the same Clear Starburst on top of it, giving it the same pretty sparkley look. :supergay:

I'm picking up a carbon fiber injector cover and radiator shroud this week, then I have to figure out what I'm going to do with the CAI. I think I may just try to polish on it some more. You can see the difference in it in the before and after pics, I hand polished it a little bit while I had it off, so I think a buffing wheel would bring it right back.
