Coming to stop out of gear stays around 2000 rpm then falls

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Coming to stop out of gear stays around 2000 rpm then falls

Post by randomZERO » Wed May 06, 2009 5:32 pm

Started last night thought it might be because of the hot to cold wet weather we have had. Check my plug wires and they seem fine. Didn't pull the plugs but it isn't misfiring. Did a quick vac leak glance but has anyone had this happen before?

Mine hovers around 1100-1200 until I come to a complete stop, but that's normal. 2000 seems a bit much.

I've had it happen to me a couple times before, but it was fine the next time I started the car. One time I had it sticking at 4k, then it would only drop down to 2.5k at idle.

I think my problem was the IAC, I think some debris made it's way in there and cause it to stick a little. When I shut it down and restarted, the car was back to normal so I didn't bother trying to track down the exact cause

In that case, definitely start with the IAC. After that I would check to see if the throttle cable is catching on something. A ecu reset might work, I know it used to work on my avenger when I had random problems.

It was an issue from the factory. Look up a TPS rewire kit.
It's one of 3 things. IAC, TPS or you have a vacume leak.

Yeah I think its the TPS as it is a intermitent . I wiggled the Wires on the tps and it works now. I am doing my active manifold hopefully tommorow so I will rewire that while im at it.

Thanks for the help everyone.

TPS rewire if you wiggle um. There are a few write ups on this.

I went to the dealer to get a rewire kit and they looked at me funny. I love how the wires for it sit against the rad hoses. lol .I think its also a vac leak at my catch can (poor boy can) so bwoody is powdercoating me one and I pick it up tommorow. You have a model number on the tps rewire or should I fab my own up?

Hence why I moved the PCV to the IM. No worries if it isn't 100% It is only flowing air through the tubes at atmospheric pressure. Even if something is loose it is unlikely to suck in air.

04 neon SE. So I have the revs holding around 1500 rpm for a few when decelerating ... being living with it for a while.

What exactly is the intent of this TPS rewire? Is it basically cutting off the old connecter and leading portion of the old wires? and the then putting some length of new wire and a new connector?

On a different note, I have cleaned by IAC and the resistance at it's contacts reads 10 ohms. If I disconnect the IAC with motor idling, the motor dies.

Yep, you are cutting off the old connector, and installing a new connector and leads. I would shrink tube and solder the splices. Using butt connectors for this is asking for the same issues you have.

The idle hangs higher due to the incorrect TPS voltage.

10 ohms is about right, I think the spec is 9 ohms for an '01 up IAC coil.

Also, IIRC, the SRT connector is a different part than the 2.0 connector?

So I don't think my issues is hanging/holding RPM.

Rather when I brake.... RPM starts coming down... then there is a surge from about 1000 to max 1500.

On close observation, the surge seems to happen when I start to take the foot off the brake pedal.

Could it be the brake booster? yikes!

You may have a small leak in the brake booster diaphragm.

Maybe just keep the brake pushed for while to simulate braking to a stop, and let up on it to see if the idle changes. If it does, you found your problem, and your next "fun time" project.

If it doesn't then it is still a VSS related issue. The the VSS is sending a pulsed signal to the PCM, it will raise the idle speed to keep the engine from stalling in off throttle, still rolling situations.

Rapidly pushing the pedal should raise the idle, as you would be creating a vacuum leak, by the excessive need to keep evacuating the booster.

Nope. Idle doesn't change.

Also I noticed that when I start driving in the morning and brake, I don't get the surge when braking or release the brake.... it's only when the motor is fully warmed. And the surge is from 1000rpm to 1250 or max 1500.

If it's the VSS, shouldn't my speedo act up or CEL come on?
