Sticking Pedal / stuck pedal

Post by hound9164 » Mon May 11, 2009 7:05 pm

I have been having a recurring problem for about 6 months now. When I hit the gas, my gas pedal sticks a bit, and after i apply more pressure, it lurches forward. I thought it was the unusually brutal chicago winter we had this year, but now it is 70 degrees and i still have the problem.

I have never messed with pedals etc on a car, so i really have no idea how to start fixing this problem. Has anybody ever had this problem with their gas pedal?

I did a search, and found almost nothing on here, so a good walk-through or detailed instructions would be extremely helpful to me and others down the road!

Have you checked for anything hitting the pedal/throttle crank?

Had to ask.

I would remove the air filter to check for anything in the TB that may be causing the plate to stick. Then I would disconnect the cable from the TB.
If you have Speed control, unhook that cable first. then see how the pedal feels. if it still sticks, then move on to the TB.

The cable unhooks by pulling some slack, while holding the TB wide open, and turning the lead barrel so the cable can slide out the slot. It may take a little wiggling to get it to come out. This will isolate the TB from the cable/pedal.

Operate the TB by hand to see if it moves smoothly.
If that is good move the pedal by hand to see if the pivot in the car is binding. It would ether be the pedal assy or the cable at this point.
There is a small clip that holds the cable to the pedal. you would need to remove this to isolate the cable from the pedal.

That's about all I can think of ATM to figure out what is actually binding/dragging.

I have a modern performance TB on there, and it is nothing new to me to take it on/off. I will be sure to check it tomorrow.

Can anybody else think of anything? i have tomorrow off and i would love to cover all my bases and get this solved.

Thank you to everybody who reads and respondes!
