2001 R/T Log *trip to the junkyard*

Post by Boyscoutgonebad » Sat May 16, 2009 2:32 pm

Figured I might as well start one of these to keep my self motivated to keep working on it.
Here is a pic of when i first got it home about a year ago.

here is the most up to date picture I have

Not a lot has changed looks wise yet

In hind site I probably paid to much for it. A little over $4000 out the door with over 100,xxx on the clock. It was my first time buying a car from a dealer so I guess you live and learn. It was the car I wanted to I guess it was worth it.

What I've done so far:

-Took it to get aligned the week after I bought it. Found out the tie rod ends were going bad too, so had a nice little bill there.

-Had some transmission repairs done, Wasn't very car savvy at the time so I don't really know what was repaired even. Just know it grinded every time going into second and the bill was about $800.

-A month latter had to Replace the Clutch. Just had the dealer throw a stock one in since I didn't have time to mess around with it.

-Speedometer stopped working so had the dealer replace the speed sensor.

All the money I was planing on using for mods ended up going to just keeping it running and on the road, so things have been moving slowly.

-Removed side moldings and de badged it: diver side came out good, passenger side looked like someone else had tried to remove it already and taped it back on when the paint started pulling off. so it was rusted and has only gotten worse since then.

-Replaced cloudy headlights with some raccoons i found on Craig's
list for $50

-lenses fell out of my fog lights so I just removed the fog lights all together

-replaced all four struts last fall. I just went with stock replacement, I'm regretting that decision now. Really want to get my hands on some BC Coil overs.

-My big recent project was replacing all the suspension bushings with the prothane kit from modern. While I was down there I also replaced the ball joints and and tie-rod ends. that was a weekend project that turned into a month long project.

I have a list of plans and projects for the summer I'll get them up here some time and Ill try to find some more pictures to post up as well.

All in all I look at this car as a learning experience. When I got it I barely knew how change oil. Come along way since then with the help of this site and family and friends. As much as possible I plan on doing all the work myself. Take my time and learn as I go.

Thanks for reading

Exactly, I'm the same way. It can be fun with the right frame of mind. Good luck!

Well the car is in good hands now. :) And it looks great! I love the 01 R/Ts. Instead of coilovers get your hands on some inexpensive lowering springs for a couple hundred bucks. Then when you have the money for the coilovers, sell the spring/strut combo on here. After that paint the silverstones to dress them up a bit more. They're probably the most attractive neon wheel made.

Live and learn is right, I've learned alot in the last six years or so. It's alot more fun doing it yourself. :)

thanks jeffM, Progress will be slow, but it'll get done eventually.

LSP, I've thought about just going the Lowing spring route, But I think I'm just going to wait till I have enough for the coilovers. I have been keeping an eye on the for sale boards, so if i find some used springs for the right price i may pick them up.

I agree I think the silverstones are some of the best stock wheels around. However I will be putting on Black SRT wheels shortly. Just to switch it up a little. The sliverstones are staying around though, just not sure what i want to do with them. They have alot of curb rash, so they need cleaned up alot.

I like this kind of progress log. You and I are the same way. My SRT was the first car I ever got my hands dirty with.

thanks Past, I enjoy working on it and getting my hands dirty. I always hated having to help my dad with stuff on the cars when I was a kid. Now i wish I would have payed more attention.

Another small project I did last month was installing a Maddog 72% STS, Booger bushings, and Jonnymopar cradle bushings. It was a pretty simple install with great results definitely worth the time and money. Especially since I got the STS for cheap of the for sale boards here.

I wasn't planing on buying an intake. I didn't think the cost for one new was worth it. Saw this on the for sale boards for $70 and snatched it up! The weather is amazing outside, perfect day to work on the car.

forgot about this.

Well LFS 60mm Throttle body, And the AEM Intake went on. Had the MPX UDP sitting on my shelf as a paper weight for the last couple months, My AC/PS belt took a shit on me so that was the motivation I needed to get the UDP installed.

Starter went out, So Got that replaced. pain in the ass. Because I couldn't get one of the intake manifold bolts off. Took me about 6 hours just to get the starter replaced.

Got tired of the my shift knob falling of once a week so finally broke down and bought the shift knob of modern since it was on sale. Absolutely love it, wish i would have bought it a long time ago.

I think that's about it. Car money has been diverted to wedding fund so not a whole lot going on untill next summer.

Before winter hits I need to replace brake rotors and pads on all four corners. Picked up a set of steelies to mount some winter tires on. Thinking about going with these
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp ... mpare1=yes

Other than that Once January hits i'm going to start getting parts to do my Timing belt and Water pump, Etc. and hopefully will be getting a new coat of paint come next summer. Thinking about going flat black.

I'll have to get some pictures over the weekend.

thanks for reading and if anyone has input on winter tires feel free to chime in.

pretty stupid question and hater comments are welcomed but i noticed on my 00 neon the hood comes to a pretty sharp point (relatively speaking) and i want to swap on a 02 front bumper on simply because it looks better and i was wondering if the stock hood would work or if i would have to get an 02 hood also

Junkyard is a great place to pick up cheap mods!

They didn't even charge me for the trunk carpets

Picked up some fog lights as well, they appear to me slightly different than the ones that were on the car but they should fit.

well the fogs didn't fit. found out there is a differnce between the R/T(and 02s) and the base 00,01. so I sold those.

Havn't been able to get anything done to the car. Broke my left leg and haven't even been able to drive the neon for going on 6 weeks now. This is one of the few times I wish my car was automatic.

I'm ready to get back In my car. Been driving my parents beater 199x oldsmobile. Makes me appreciate my car a little more.
