Valve problem or normal?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Valve problem or normal?

Post by shinta86 » Fri May 29, 2009 10:43 pm

So I bought a head off of another member on srtforums and when I looked at it. I saw that one of my intake valves weren't closing all the way. As shown in the picture I can see light in a crack about a fingernail width. It is only in cyl 3. Is this a concern? Cams are out btw.

With the cams out the valve should be completely shut. There may just be some dirt under it. Try filling the port with solvent, and tapping the retainer with a soft face hammer. If it is dirt it might flush it off the seat/valve face and seal. If it will not seal, the valve may be bent, or the seat damaged. As long as the seat can be resufaced, it should be an easy fix. If the valve is tweaked, replace it with a new one. Either way, it isn't the end of the world.

May as well have it seviced by a reputable shop before install for piece of mind anyways. Beats pulling it to have it repaired. I would rather spend for a mild valve job/go through, than redoing HG etc.

All the shops around me are way to expensive. It's around $300 for a valve job. I actually bought another this head instead of having mine serviced cause of that.

If the $300 includes guides, that is fairly average. IIRC I paid about $275 a couple years ago.

So now you have two whipped heads....
