iPhone Mount

Post by neonsox » Mon Jun 01, 2009 1:53 pm

This one is for all you iPhone or iPod Touch owners out there, although I suppose it applies to most bigger-screen cell phones... I'm looking for a decent mount for my phone. I'm leaning towards a vent mount since it would take up the least amount of space there and hopefully not look too bad. I have an '04 SXT already crowded with a satellite radio and occasionally a GPS unit when I need it.

Any suggestions?

Belkin makes several cup holder holders.

I have one for my Palm. It sits in the cupholder and holds the phone as well as routes the charger to that location :)

I use a suction cup window mount, but mount it to my gauge cluster, above and to the right of the fuel gauge, and it has a bendy arm...I have the iPhone sitting right in front of the sunglasses perch......As you can see, I have a radar detector, GPS, and iPhone, and it isn't too cluttered.

I now no longer have the iPod Touch, but have an iPhone 3G.....the stand is a Bracketron.....Here are some pics of the stand(which is a universal holder for a lot of things....very handy...

i have a 3g as well and searched all over to find a mount that was also a charger (damn you apple for changing the charging system after all these years). i also wanted a way to have an audio out that did not require being plugged into the headphone jack. the iphone looks sleek, why ruin it with a bunch of cords? after a few weeks of searching i found this:

http://us.kensington.com/html/14493.html

it is the perfect solution and works perfectly with the 3g. it even comes with a small remote that attaches to the steering wheel that gives you the basic functions (play/pause, stop, rewind, ff) and never gave me a problem sending/receiving signals. the only drawback i found was that it does not work while in a phone call as it is using a line out and not the headphone out (by the same token the volume is disabled on the 3g during playback as it is a true low level line out). with the 3g on speakerphone i had no problems at all.

i have since upgraded my hu to a 3g compatible and no longer use this. pm me if you are interested or want to know more about it.

-edit-

for my gps i used the normal short windshield suction cup and one of the mounting discs. i used some of the plastic 3m velcro stuff (it works like velcro but much stronger and better glue) to hold the disc to the underside of the dash overhang. i then ran all the wires (antenna, power, audio-out) indise the dash to their various connections for a cleaner look.

this is a shot of it when i first connected everything to test. i have since ran the wires a little better and moved the radar to the lower portion of the windshield right at the gap between the wiper blades.

along the same lines i ran the power for the radar under the dash as well, just to keep things hidden and clean. and i miss my old hu too.

Sorry but such mounts are cheap and ugly.
I would never install such thing in my car.

And especially if they sit in the middle of the front window: It looks ugly and you have it everytime directly in front of your face - that a big truck can disappear behind it...
