No air through my vents, but the blower is working. HELP!!

Post by mastershake » Fri Jun 05, 2009 1:11 pm

Ok, i'll try to keep this short......

The day my gf bought her car (about two weeks ago) i was driving it and the blower was blowing, but the air flow was barely (i mean BARELY) coming out of the vents. It kinda sounded like there may be something inside the blower motor area or associated piping blocking the flow. It souinded like it was running, but also had "hummiing" sound added to the normal blower motor sound. It appeared that the blower speed was responding when i turned the speed knob up and down. There was no wierd smells, and the "flapper" inside was moving when i cycled through all the modes (floor, vent, defrost, recirc., etc.).

The next day the problem was gone. And today (two weeks later) it did it again out of nowhere.

Any ideas??

P.S. i dropped the blower and looked/reached inside to look for debris, and found nothing. It was perfectly clean.

Just talked to her. Apparently everytime she starts the car it seems to get a little better. So maybe it is something in the blower motor. I'd just imagine you'd smell something if th emotor was going.

Remove the motor and apply 12V directly to it. See if you can reproduce a problem. Was the blower used a lot (i.e. AC on ALL summer long on high speed)? If so, there's a good chance it's on its way out.

Not sure ho wuch the previous owner used the blower. We've only had the car for a couple weeks.

Ok, i'll give it a try. I have a 12VDC power supply in the house, i'll plug her in and let her run and see what happens. I may just go to the junk yard this weekend and get a new one. They are dime a dozen here.

^Not a bad idea. Shouldn't cost you much. Try to get one out of a newer car, or one with lower mileage. Some people (like my mom) use their blower 24/7. It's kinda like starting your car 20+ times a day; eventually the starter is going to give out. Be sure to check out the electrical system surrounding the motor (wiring, switches, etc) to isolate the motor as the problem.

Iv had maple keys blow out my vents before lol, do you know if there is a filter of sorts that may have been put in that has clogged?
Also oyu may want to pull out the vents (easy) and see if anything flies out at full fan speed.

with no noise in the background, turn your fan speed dial to see if it actually changes speed.I bet you have only one speed, High....
Chrysler products are known to have the blower motor resistor to fail leaving you with either High speed or no speed....

Yeah my cars are notorious for blower motor resistor failures, lol.

So i drove her car all day yesterday. It seems to come and go. It does change speed when i adjust the speed knob when it's being wierd. And i've gone through all the ducting the best i can. It seems like the motor is "kinda" going out. Sometimes full blast will put out air as equivilant to having the speed on the first notch. Then i'll go into store or something, and when i leave it will be ok again.

I feel like the windings in the motor are "starting" to crap thus causing intermitant resistance and not letting the blower spin as fast as it should.

The coils in the resistor block may have broken, shorting onto the other every now and then.
