car blues....

Post by moparman00 » Tue Jun 16, 2009 2:32 am

I'm on my 2nd transmission(both manual), with new tranny mount, torque strut polyurethane "race" inserts....etc.....due to the car originally feeling very loose, between the motor and trans/wheels...then lost the diff pin.....hence the second transmission....

when the car was all set, after the tranny swap, everything felt tight...the clutch, no play between the motor and the wheels, everything was great.....but it all feels the same now....i can be coasting in 3rd, with the car "pulling"the motor, and when i lightly give it the throttle, you can feel the motor jerk to pull the car, so anytime you accelerate or decelerate, it jerks like crazy.......

It just seems like everytime its fixed it just goes to shit again.....the car was like this from the beginning....first motor mount inserts fixed the issue, it felt great....then back to crap....after crap i lost the diff pin....swapped in new (used) tranny, new clutch kit, and tranny mount.....felt great, now back to shit....help

i just want to know if/why this will be a yearlyish issue...cause it makes driving so horrible....

The newer MTX's came factory with dif pin retainers. I installed them when I did the clutch for good measure. IDK what year they started doing it tho. The '04 FSM shows them in the drawing, where the '01 does not.
I would begin by checking the mounts by putting it in gear, and with the hood up rock the car back and forth to see how much movement you have. The engine off obviously.

funny you mention having the car off, rocking it......i have done it, before the new tranny, mounts, etc....and now that its all starting again, and you can see the motor, while in gear, moving independently of the car.......

BRR searched and search a while back but couldn't find any reference to diff tabs in the newer transmissions.

Try switching from ATF to synchromesh or the NVG fluid

The only things that are going to give you play in your driveline would be mounts, worn axle splines, worn transfer gears ("ring gear"), carrier bearings, the gears themselves, but I doubt they all would be worn. The clutch hub/input shaft splines. But worn gears/ carrier bearings would give you some serious whining noises, so you would know there was definately something wrong there. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

How to fix your car:
1. Buy a Haynes manual
2. Read Haynes maual
3. Read and search appropriate threads, trust us, it's been covered before
4. Fix car
5. Consume beer of job well done

me? my car, as other 2gn (maybe just 00-02) uses regular motor oil in the trans....which lead me to believe when I threw the diff pin in the first tranny, that i had in fact blown the rear main seal, or something...
