engine or tranny problem.. not sure

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

engine or tranny problem.. not sure

Post by jT » Tue Jun 16, 2009 3:42 am

ok this problem has manifested itself in two different, but related, ways...

and ill state up front that the problem started shortly after i had my timing belt replaced, but i dont know if that has anything to do with it or if it was just a coincidence (although it happened within a couple days of the timing belt...... hmmm)

first the problem started doing this....... if i braked hard for a red light or whatever, a couple seconds after the car was stopped the rpms would drop almost like the car was going to stall, and then it went back to normal wthin half a second or so...... this happened a few times.

it has not done that lately but now what its doing is this

same thing.. during hard braking typically (but recently has also happened while easily braking entering my driveway) it will seemingly come out of gear and then go back into gear and cause the car to buck/bang a little or the tires to squeal a little...... i dont know if its actually coming out of gear, thats just what it seems like... since if i press the gas peddle its like its in neutral with the revving

needless to say i dont like this.. and it seems to be happening more often than it originally was

thoughts?

Assuming it's an automatic, have you checked the fluid level? if that is good, possibly the torque converter is giving up. At least you have the 31th, which will be much cheaper to fix, than the 41te.

Other than a stall test, IDK.

Stall is putting it in gear, applying the brakes and giving it gas to see what it limits the rpms to. If you don't have a tach it is piontless. Plus IDK what the specified rpm is. You only want to do this for a few seconds to avoid overheating the fluid.

But the free rev like in "N" is how the older TC's in the 727/904's acted when failing. You could rev it and it would engage harshly.

You could prolly pickup a complete 3 speed/converter for less than $300. I see these on ebay for cheap every now and then, so the market price can't be too high.

umm ya if your Tc is shot. its better to rebuild the transmission. How many miles does it have?

a Torue Converter is not $300.00 where they hell does averyone get these numbers from 120.00 the most. If you are looking for a great TC order one from Natpro best prices and great warranty

My car is having the same problem. I called around and the ATX trannys seem to be around $300, i'm just going to buy one straight out.

when i was calling around last year about the TCC solenoid (before i completely knew it was the solenoid) shops were giving me a price of around $900 to do the TC.... so whatever the part costs... service would still not be cheap.

same with getting another tranny, putting it in would cost an arm and a leg and then the car probably wouldnt run right heh... gremlins..

oh and my car has 168K
