Got butterfly valves?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Got butterfly valves?

Post by quicksilvr » Sat Sep 24, 2005 6:18 pm

I would be the happiest person in the world if someone could get me the specifications for the butterfly valves in a magnum intake manifold. I need the diameter and the thickness, and I need to know if they have any beveled or chamfered edges. And anything else that you might know that would enable my brother to fabricate them from sheet aluminum. He will probably not have the exact thickness of aluminum sheet, so it will have to be lathed, and in order to chuck it in the lathe, he'll need to screw it onto something. Meaning, if I could also get the location of the holes that attach the valves to the spindle, that would be awesome. Then he can use those holes to attach a stud that will let him hold on to it to lathe them down.

Yours is off in Arizonza at NRGY isnt it? I would LOVE to send them my magnum head and manifold and have them do their magic before I ever even put it all on my car....but unless I get a huge raise, that's not happening anytime soon. Do they work any kind of deals if you have them work on more than one item? Don't get me wrong, their prices are great for the quality they put out, but I was just wondering.

Yup... he's been way to busy lately with some other stuff going on and last I heard Nick haulted incoming orders for a bit to catch up and get everything organized.

Also doubt he'd do a discount for that since it's really only Nick doing the work.

Ahh. He's been around long enough to know how to handle it though I would think. Dangit!, thinking about this made me go to the site and now I really want to send him my head and manifold for a street power port and a manifold port. But, then if I'm going to do it, I might as well pay for the race port....

Mines already on my car, otherwise I would measure them up for you.

As long as you give him the lower section of the plenum he can measure them up for you. The only thing is I can't remember if they're elliptical or circular. I think circular, but don't hold me to it. Taking a guess from memory, I would estimate the thickness to be around 12-14ga material.

I did grab a pic though, don't know if it helps you any.

Hey, thanks for the consideration guys, I am actually now a very happy camper. I guy in Cincinnati has the complete butterfly assembly with actuator rod that I'm getting from him. Ending up working way better than fabricating them.

Yes, that was one way to do it. Problem is, he is in Longview, Texas, and the lower plenum is in St. Joseph, Missouri. I was trying to avoid shipping it down there and back. Also, just measuring the plenum isn't the best way to do it, because there is a small amount of clearance needed, and only by measuring the actual valves would I know exactly what that clearance needed to be.

Thanks a ton man, I appreciate it alot. I haven't finalized this deal with the guy in Cinci, so pictures and specs would be greatly appreciated in case it doesn't pan out for whatever reason.

Thinking about it, they wouldn't be too critical to make. They don't actually need to seal perfectly, as there are 4 open runners next to them. They just need to block the airflow until needed. some small gaps around the edges prolly won't affect much at all. the air is going to go through the "normal" runners before it tries to get by the plates. Not like there is a huge pressure drop behind them.

^ Exactly what I was thinking when I made mine. I used some thin aluminum I had laying around, and cut them to shape and then filled them down. The bolts olding them in are uber small. I wanna say m3.

M3 sounds right, that's what the Mustang TB plate screws are.

Edit: Lowes has the screws. :D

The screws might be M4, looking at some here at work, M3 seems too small M5 way too big.

Fuck, now I feel like Goldilocks. :cheerleader: :aargh:
