Good pics of ported Magnum or SOHC heads?

This is the place to ask questions about your engine components like cams, valves, pistons… just anything that is generally "engine" specific. This also includes questions about exhaust systems such as exhaust manifolds, piping size, mufflers, ect...

Good pics of ported Magnum or SOHC heads?

Post by daver » Fri Jun 19, 2009 9:37 pm

Anybody refer me to a post or site containing good pics of ported SOHC or Magnum SOHC heads?

Found a few posts from searching, but some of the pics are old and have been removed. Any suggestions or direction would be appreciated, thanks.

Thanks, those will definitely help. Gonna attack the head today, so maybe will try to take some pics of before and after.

Wow, I didn't realize the exhaust side was that bad. This makes me want to snatch up a spare head and do some work.

The exhaust isn't that bad. It is great for what it's designed for... low end torque and a max rpm of 6,000ish rpm with a very small lift camshaft.

Compare that to an exhaust desgined for 13,000ish rpm...

So I guess a mild port is all that's needed? Does the same apply on the intake?

I wouldn't say a mild port is all that's needed. The port just needs to be matched to the application. Take a look at the Magnum port versus the standard port and compare the differences in the port to the differences in the hp/tq, cam size... ect.

what tool was used on the exhaust bowls?

03blackrt: what tool was used on the exhaust bowls in the pics?

Have you ever gone through on a SOHC head in the exhaust bowl area? Wondering how thick that back and side wall are in that area?

BTW: that a T3 lotus head in the later pic?

I used a large sanding drum to get the nice sweeping curves and nice blending into the stock port. I find that smaller bits create a choppy, wavey shape unless you're really good.

A light cut with a carbid bit is required to make rom for the sanding drum...

There should be enough material to come straight down (parallel to the inside face for the vale seat) from the inside diameter of the valve seat. Althought ideally this arae will tapper inwards toward the valve stem (like the stock port).

sanding drum.. good idea.

Post by daver » Wed Jul 01, 2009 7:56 pm

Ahh larger diameter sanding drum. On my test head I was using a ~ 3/4" round stone to keep the back wall uniform. It wasn't quite large enough to completely take out the step in the back wall just below the seat. Wasn't sure that there was enough material to completely take that out, but apparently there is.

Yeah the small bits can be hard to keep things smooth. Light pressure and moving quickly helps, as does using a sanding roll or stone afterwards.

I've done all my past work with 1/8" shank bits and various dremels, but I should probably step up to a 1/4" shank tool at some point. Maybe this would be a good opportunity. I could probably practice with it on the scrap standard SOHC head before I tackle the magnum head.
